Planetside Software has released the beta of Terragen 2 (http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/tg2/index.shtml)
You can download the free non-commercial version if you click on the image.
It has some restrictions like:

Render Size Maximum: 800x600
Render Detail Maximum: 1.0
Antialiasing Maximum: 3
Number of Rendered Populations: 3

Of course, to get rid of those restrictions, you'll need to buy it.
The good thing is, if you buy it now (before it turns gold) you'll get it for a nice price.

Been waiting for this for something like 64 years. It's a race with Duke Nukem Forever to see which actually comes out first.

When will TG2 be available?
The first Tech Preview version was released on December the 15th, 2006. You can find more information about the Tech Preview here (http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/tg2/tech_preview.shtml).

The final version of TG2 is expected to be released in 2008.

I remember how fun fun it was to play with .07 and .09 many years ago. Would be nice to see it released soon. Nevertheless I'm not holding my breath.:D

I have fond memories of using v0.7 to build sky boxes for Half-Life 1. It's slightly more technical nowadays...

It's still in BETA? Sweet Jebus... maybe if Dr. Pepper comes out and says they will buy everyone a free can, this will finally get released.

I thought the same thing, but it appears it's just out of alpha testing and the Beta's now available.

Render Size Maximum: 800x600I know this is a free non-commercial version but what the heck can you use it for at that resolution? They could've at least let people render at 1024 x 768.

well it's not for everyone, just like half of the software updates posted here as news. But you take what you will from it, or not. Apps like TGD and Vue fill a niche, with Vue being overpriced bloated software full of bugs (but that's another thread all together).

I was dead excited about T2 when i first heard about it (think i was about 12 at the time... im 21 now...). I thought T2 might be a real contender with Vue for the best Procedural terrain generation software, or at least keep Vue watching their heels, but now its not only fallen behind, it seems to just have disappeared altogether.
Either they are brewing something amazing at Planetside, or, more likely, they are sat drinking beer and playing on the PS3 and cant really be arsed getting up and finishing T2...

Man, i must have got out of the wrong side of bed this morning or something...

I downloaded the beta and gave it a try. It's very different from the Terregen of the past, and I have to say, it's very difficult to use. The results were decent, but in a little 600 x 800 window, it's kinda hard to really evaluate.

Given more time, I could probably figure out how to use it, but I have to say that on the outset it's way too complex and not user-friendly at all. And man is it ever sloooooooow.

Still, it will be cool if they ever finish it. Unfortunately, it lags behind Vue in almost every way. :(

That is probably a big reason for the slow development.

If that is the case, i guess it is understandable that development will be slow. It does seem to be running a lot slower than they announced it would tho. Hopefully we will see some development soon. They should really think about taking on more staff if it is just 2 guys. There is no way they can keep up with developments in technology. If T2 proved to be not very user friendly (as has been stated here above), then they wouldnt be able to make changes quickly enough to satisfy consumers...

Anyway, hope it turns out to be good.

I think many people feel scared when they see a node based approach. Of course there are parts that could be polished, but overall I think the interface is much more userfriendly then most people think ;-)
