View Full Version : Help Needed: Reptile Eye
yoroba 12-06-2008, 12:35 PM I need some help making a reptile eye look more interesting. Does anyone have some advice on how to juice this up a little? I was for instance thinking about making a cavity for the pupil. Would that seem like a good idea?

will it be animated? might be tricky to get it to deform nicely with a modeled pupil cavity. but with a modeled cavity you could raise the self illumination as it seems a bit dull at the moment.
the specular highlight could be sharper and the iris' texture seems a bit low-contrast compared to reptile eyes i googled.

It will be animated, yes. So I guess we'll decide against a modelled pupil cavity.
I added some more contrast and reworked the eye texture a bit. Made two different ones and I can't decide which one I like best, or if any of them are even good enough.. They still seem a little dull I think...

I'll make the specular highlight sharper today..

The iris (your inner mesh) shout be flat. The refraction of the outer sphere bends the light so it seems a bit curved.
As you can see in Divi's reference image the shadow of the eyelid on the iris makes the eye a lot more interesting, so get some shadows in yoru scene (You will need to turn off 'cast shadows' on the outer sphere, or it will obstruct all shadows).
Instead of a Phong/Blinn shader on the outer sphere you should try a raytraced material. It will render a lot slower, but it will look much better. (You will need to add a HDR background or some other environment, otherwise your eye has nothing to reflect!)

Good points. I'll definitely try out your suggestions tomorrow. I'll post it when I have an update. Thanks :)
