does Maya have joint/vertex numerical weighting percentages? also in XSI there is a feature that makes all joints and influenced vertex/geometry color coded for easy painting. does Maya have a similar feature?

For the first question, answer is yes.

Open windows>general editor>component editor.

With vertex selected, it will be listing all the weight value in Smooth skins tab.

For the second question, answer is no if it is a smooth skin.
If you do skin>edit smooth skin>Paint skin weight tools, it will give you only b/w feedback of selected joints.

If you bind as rigid bind, you should be able to get color feedback if by activating color Joints.
