I'm late to enter in this contest, but still I'll try my best!
The theme which I'm thinking of is of a HINDU mythological character named 'ARJUN'. He was of the age of MAHABHART. He was a great and unbeatable warrior. It is believed that he could hit the target looking in the water. He spent many years in forest.
I'll soon post some concept sketches. I want to show him in a very agressive and angry mood, with new age machines and plasmic guns, in a barren land with lot of dust and smoke.

Its my first concept sketch for character ARJUN,
please comment on it. I'll have to correct its face a bit, because he's an heroic legend.

As I earlier said, Arjun was of time of Mahabharat. He was a great warrior with extra ordinary skills with his arrow and bow. I'll add a bow and arrow in a different manner. I'll start making its bg and painting the model. I don't have much knowledge of 3d so I'll stick to Photoshop only.

I don't know where we have to credit images that we have taken for bg matte? If anybody knows then plz tell.

I don't know how the copyright information is handled for matte painting stuff but these are some beautiful images. I'd like to see how you are going to incorporate steampunk into the overall scene

Just started ARJUN's upper part. It just have midtones and shadows, no highlights now. Only torso part will be human rest will be machines. Critics & suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks for a good suggestion. Can you suggest how can I make it more realistic? Just your view or method? I haven't done any sort of lighting yet, that i'll do when i'l merge it with bg.

Hi Anurag!

I think the texture on the armour and the body should be a bit more realistic shades. Like the armour could be a bit rusty and more real metal like look. and the body can have some more tan. the blood spots could be a bit smudged up with the skin rather than just like a leak. I hope this helps.

All the best.

Bhavi

Yes I got your point! Thanks cutebhav
I'll add some rust through blending mode in layers, but i think that i'll do when a basic metal and its shape is formed. Some more blood and wounds will also be added.
All in all what do you think is this a better work? This is first time i have participated in a competition and i'm very new in this field.

I like your enthusiam for your entry but I don't think you are taking this piece in the right direction. It isn't very "steampunk". You need to do some more research into the genre. Keep in mind the victorian theme. I did a quick search and came up with some links to help you along:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk
http://www.myfreewallpapers.net/fantasy/pages/steampunk-landscape.shtml
http://www.neatorama.com/2007/07/16/steampunk-sculptures-by-stphane-halleux/

Piece specific, your human form is too static and his right side, although suposed to be further from the viewer, looks like it's closer than his left. The background doesn't fit the character or the theme of steampunk.

You might want to make a rough sketch of what you want the piece to look like. If you already have one, show us.

I hope you didnt take offense to this but I don't think it's fair to you that 400+ people saw your entry and decided to stay quiet about it. We should be helping each other.

Thanks papershaker for your useful advice.

I really don't take your words as offence. and I'm not at all disappointed that my entry is not up to the mark.
Its right that I haven't done any research on steampunk, which I should have done earliler. I just thought steampunk means metal, machines, gears I mean something related with wars and all that, but after reading your post I did google on steampunk and found that steampunk is like addition of technology with a touch of romance to it.
If you had told this a few days earliler, I could have changed my concept. But deadline is very close now and I can't give up.

I will do everything to make my concept better, I want to give 100% in it.

If you can tell, how I can make it better in steampunk genre, please tell me.
It would be a big help for a newbie.
thanks a lot :)

Considering papershaker's advice, I tried to make him a bit more steampunk, I don't know how is it now.

Hi
This is my final image for this challenge.
I tried to bring a great warrior ARJUN into steampunk genre. ARJUN is a Hindu mythological character who was famous for extraordinary skills in war. His discription can be found in 'Mahabharat' which is one the most respected Hindu holy book.
Its essence is steampunk but not in same european style, I tried to give a diffierent touch to steampunk mixed with some modern effects.
I completed everything in Photoshop, its background is a matte painting. ARJUN is fully painted and composited in Photoshop. Except those stupid looking bots over there, whole character is done with good old mouse. I was running short of time so I had to make those bots in 3dSMax. Since I don't have good knowledge of MAX, i couldn't make them detailed.

I'm thankful to all the people whose remarks urged me to work day and night for this challenge. As I'm a just a few months old in cg field so this is the first time that I have entered in such a big competition. I have learnt a lot from it. I'm very thankful to CGSociety.org
thanks
and
Good to all!!!
