View Full Version : Placing a 3d object into a 2d scene (compositing?)
BadMange 06-19-2003, 04:19 AM Are there any good tutorials on compositing a 3d object into a 2d scene and creating cast shadows, etc, to make it look realistic? I can't seem to figure it out. I modeled a huge rear wing and want to put it on the trunk of a car. I've created a plane underneath the wing and positioned the wing correctly in the Perspective view, and then I get confused...
I apologize if this has been asked before. I did a search for "compositing" and "shadows" in the Maya help files and this site, but I'm probably not using the correct terminology or something.
Thanks,

let's see if I can help. you gotta wrk around my terminology...
a) in camera mode, you should use an image gate (I think that's what it's called), and the use the car image you want to add the wing to as a base (camera setting) __> fit to image gate or something like that
b) since the image gate works with the selected camera, you then model (which you have) and move the wing in place; you can use other cameras to see what you're doing
c) create a plane which will be placed in alignment with the image gate image (in this instance, the car body)
d) place light in scene so that the shadow cast by the wing onto the plane you created in c) matches the shadows in your image - or you can adjust shadow density here or later in photoshop
e) Make the plane invisible (glass) so it doesn't render / no specular
f) render and save in a format with alphachannel. The shadows should be rendered and when you select the alpha channel you will pick up both the wing and it shadows
g) in photoshop, open your rendered file and your orginal image gate image.
h) composite and adjust colours.
i) FINISH

You can also add an image plane to the camera. then modelise a simple shape (standy) that matches the truck and the ground.
Assing the standy a "useBackground" material. You'll get the nice shadows and the reflections. ;)
Tip: for tutorials search hear in cgtalk.

Thanks to you both. While I've never heard of an "image gate," I have the pic of the car as an image plane. Maybe the same thing but different terminology (like you stated)? Regarding step "e)" - duh! That's the step I didn't do! [slaps forehead]. I'll go through your steps and try it out.
Btw, I did do a search here and the first thread that popped up was "Maya Tutorials." I did a keyword search (Ctrl+F) through every page of that thread but didn't find what I needed. Again, I apologize for wasting everyone's time.
Thanks a lot!
