My first post in the finished section, Woohoo!
I am currently attending the Art Institute of Phoenix, and this is a final project for one of my classes. There's still alot I'm unhappy with, but its due tommorrow, so I gotsta call it done. Crits would still be appreciated though, since I will probably touch it up once graduation time rolls around and I have to start putting together my portfolio. I've done plenty of low poly modelling for other classes, but this is my first real high res piece. Also my first attempt at non game art texturing.

First, I REALLY like the concept here, and what the image seems to be relaying about dying for a cause.

You show nice attention to detail here, which can be seen in the hairs and creases/folds on the fingers, the aged/worn metals, and the dragons on the sword's hilt.

One thing that catches my eye is that the golden dragon seems somehow out of alignment with the sword/sword handle. Or maybe it's just out of alignment with the other dragon?

You might consider having the hilt and grip in focus and only having the flag out of focus. . .Why not show off the fancy hilt and grip more by doing this?

This might be a silly question, but is the sword embedded in an helmet? I'm assuming this, and I just want to make sure I'm right.

Overall, good job here!

the sword is embedded into the top plate of the guys chest armor (the plates are layered), so you'd be seeing the scene pretty much from his eyes.
As for the dragons, i think its the way they wrap around the hilt, along with the someone distorted field of view that I used that makes it seem that way.
Thanks for the comments!

a friend mentioned that he thought this piece would benefit from more shadows, like from the hand and the sword. I didn't add them because I was afraid of making the composition too complicated. What do you think?

i would agree with the shadows. there is a highlight that goes right under the hand and no shadows to show that there is a hand on the breast plate. if the light source is coming from somewhere else i suppose it may work but wouldn't the light source have to be right in his face. anyway this looks cool. i'd give ya an "A". look at that i always new i could be a teacher.

nice concept...
pretty weird though...you have added a nice amount of details and still it looks defenitly 3D...especially his hand...it's like it's layered in Photoshop or something...
shadows could be the solution...but maybe tweaking your Depth of Field could make it better too...
good luck with it!

A small crit and a bigger one. The small one is the DOF is too heavy and indeed the whole sword could be in focus while the flag is still out of it.

Bigger crit is the guys armor on his hand is very photorealistically textured, his hand is somewhere in between cartoonish and photorealistic. The sword, breastplate and flag and very cartoonishly done. I would settle for one style all over the picture and try to achieve photorealistic textures everywehre or stick with cartoonish textures.
I love the texture on the gauntlet :)

Thanks for all the great crits, everyone. They'll help me alot when I rework it for my portfolio at graduation time. This is my first attempt at realistic textures, so I'm sure I can get some better cohesion with some more practice. Thanks again!

Any reason for Art Institute over UAT?

It's easier to get good drugs at the Art Institute of Phoenix, at least that was true when I went.

Lol, I wouldn't know anything about the availability of drugs here, I spend my life here in the computer labs.
I didn't really care which school I went to, as its not the medium that matters, but how much work you put into it. I knew that regardless of the school, I would be teaching myself alot of what I wanted to know, as the usual pace of class learning (where you have to make sure everyone has learned each technique before you can move on to the next one) is too slow for me.
I just happened to have a friend who went to AIPX, and he said that there were some good teachers. Which I now agree with. I wouldn't be nearly at the level I'm at if it weren't for some of the teachers that would hang out with me outside of class and teach me some more advanced stuff, and give me honest critiques. The main Game Art teacher here has even set up a great web site where students can show off their work and get it critiqued. That site has been invaluable.
Well, I hope that answer suffices.
