View Full Version : 32 Bit Res In R8.1 & 16 Bit In XL 6 For Best Display ?
Scott M C4D 06-19-2003, 04:05 AM Hiya,
I don't know why this is but R8 needs to be displayed in 32Bit mode so i don't have severe banding in the render.
XL 6 does this in Open GL mode but displays everything perfectly in 16 bit mode.
Maybe it's my 3 year old Ati Rage 128 GL (32Meg) not being compatible.
R8 crashes when i try and work in GL modes too.
I am using an Athlon 750,320MB SD Ram,20 Gig HD,and 15" Monitor,CDRW ect.
Yeah i know my monitor is too small too.
I am still deciding what PC to buy so i can upgrade.
Any ideas ?

Yeah, it's the Rage card. Very lame video card you've got there. You'd be fine with anything from nVidia from the Ti-4200 on up (not the MX), or from Ati from the Radeon 8500 on up. If you go ATI you might be better off starting with the 9000 and up, though, as I've heard of some problems with the 8500.

i use a MX until i can afford a better card and i dont have any problems with it in r8. i have actually run it before on a gf2 and it worked fine unless very high polygoned scenes where in the viewport.
but its all about how you work. its seldom i have all objects in a scene until the very last render. i create most objects separately and assemble them one by one as i go.
a class-mate has ahad some issues with a radeon 9700 to be noted. i believe it was his 400mhz ram that made the system unstable but at his comp-store they told him the graphcard. after switching to an older radeon the problem disappeared.
To answer your question: i am unsure of what the cause is, you should borrow a better card from a friend and see if it helps before ou buy a new card. it could get a bit disappointing if you get a new card and still have banding issues.
On the upgrade, i recommend you check what powersource your box have before buying a upgrade-kit with motherboard, cpu, rams and stuff. if you have below 300W there could be trouble getting power to all the cards, ram and such making it _very_ unstable or not even able to boot up at all.
this is what ive been able to run on a 240W psu without system-crash, it might give you a hint if you plan on upgrading instead of buying a new rig:
motherboard: asusA7333
cpu: amd athlon xp 1.67 ghz
ram: 2x512 DDRAM at 333mhz
gcard: gf4 mx440
i also have 2 cdroms, 2 harddrives, 2 chassifans and a funky cpu-cooler sucking up power. this is right on the edge of what the 240W can supply, i tried adding a zalman cpufan that needs a tad bit more power than my old fan and it is right over the top not even able to boot up the BIOS.
hope you got _some_ useful info atleast ;)

Go buy a cheap geforce 4 mx. they cost pennies and will help a whole lot.
