Thought I would post this character before I try animating it. I wanted to produce a fairly simple character, in a plasticene model sort of style for some animation tests. Also trying to get a bit of character into it, while keeping things simple (stuck on eyes and ears, only 3 fingers etc.) I notice that most forum users produce excellent work with some stunning photorealism, lighting and complexity, but not a lot of animation. Do people find they get stuck on the modelling stage? or is that all that people want to acheive (nothing wrong with that)?
While lots of the work here show that Cinema4d can produce excellent results in the stills department, I have seen less animation that is of the same standard, but I guess that may be because animation is so time consuming.

Hi James,

Just so you know- you're not alone in wanting to use Cinema primarily for character animation. Actually, I've yet to explore any of the advanced rendering or thinking particles malarky (haven't even installed any other module except Mocca), and I'm not terribly interested in spending days fiddling with texture channels. Don't get me wrong, I'm in absolutely awed some of the photorealistic renderings people are squeezing out of Cinema, but my main goal is to try and get something to look like it's moving by it's own motivation, and I think it's possible with R8 given a lot of practice and determination.

In case you're interested, you can see some of my animation efforts on my site:

Good luck rigging and skinning your model! Looks great to me so far!

partly its because of lack of information. I mean there are almost no tutorials on how to animate in C4D. While there are countless head tuts avalible.

thanks for the encouragement - I loved the work on your site, your geoff character really comes to life - any plans for him?

I am planning to try a really minimal approach - more hanna barbera than disney/pixar. I think the key is finding time saving strategies, otherwise a single individual can never complete anything. While I would love to rig a character down to each nostril, I will have to resist the temptation.

btw - it looks like I stole geoff's ears for my character!

you can learn to animate with a pen and paper. cinema4D is just a tool to animate with. There's plenty of information.

There are lots of tutorials on how to animate. Most of the work we show at our site is animated in C4D and After Effects.

OK not CA but still animation, you have to just animate with what you have. I learnt animation using a super-8 camera and editing in camera and also using this great 12ASA black and white film and a rostrum camera. But you can still animate with a biro and a camera and a few bits of paper.

Be creative with what you have. Hey try a flik-book (they're great!). Otherwise get a Sphere and set a few keyfames with that. Make it look busy, or sad or whatever you can believe it feels.
