ive modelled a whole human in maya and have to u.v map just the head. is there a way i can map just the head and leave the body blank. iv got my u.v map for the head but it tiles on to the body too?

well, does it have to be in one piece? and if so, does it have to be unmapped or does it have to look like it's not mapped? you could always make part of the uv space the head isn't using completly white or grey and put all the body polygons in there, so it looks like it's not mapped. or just leave them both as seperate objects.
since im a max user i don't know if maya has anything specific that would do what you want it to do.

Assign seperate shaders to the faces that define the head/body sections. Once done, select the faces of the head and create your uv mappings. As the body doesn't use the same shader, you wont get funky texture wierdness happening.
