This would be my first challenge and I'm fairly inexperienced with 3D but not with technical illustration. I'd like to do a hard drive but compared to a car and some of the other idea's that have been mentioned it's seems very basic, I have an old one I can take apart and photograph for reference. Will this be acceptable or is it too basic ?

model what you can manage mate, its accuracy, not complexity that would count in the end.
plus, its easy coming up with the initial idea of something big/cool/complicated but, there is no point in starting something so complex that you cant finish it in 6 weeks ...
besides im not sure a hard drive is that simple to do well anyway ..

I agree 100% with what simjoy said....

I have two questions:
- Would a Rolleiflex middle format camera be allowed as object for the challenge ?
- A friend borrowed me such a camera. It not only looks nostalgic but it also is full of mechanical miracles which is why I am so intrigued to model it. So instead of searching for reference images would it be allowed to work from the real object ??

Hope so, that's what I'm doing. I'm going to post the photo's I've taken of the item.
Roberto, instead of rendering like the sample car, showing the guts inside the shell what about rendering the parts separated like this lawn mower engine? Or like a Haynes car manual. Not sure which way I'm going yet but I'd like to know the option is available.

Without any offence to your suggestion Wyatt, doing an 'exploded' view isn't as complicated as a cutaway with everything in situ, in effect you'd only be modelling the components and arranging them in a logical order as opposed to making sure gears mesh, valves open, pistons... erm... cumbust ???
The Cutaway will show the model as if it was working with holes cut in it so you can see the parts moving, an exploded view would be good along side maybe ?
Re:Sim and Roberto comment above, thanks for the clarification.

The model needs to be cutaway, thus the name of the challenge...
I know iti a huge pain, but that is part of the fun.
Good luck guys.

Seeing as I am also working from a real object I don't see why you can't ? Camera'a are quite complicated though, as long as you can get it apart safely enough, the hard drive I have died a long time ago, I'm going to take it apart and photograph it, but if I can't get it back together it doesn't matter :D

In the HMC 14 Landis did some great work, he presented all his work with the HMC title, his name etc, you wrote this Roberto, I was wondering if you could post us a template or if you weren't that worried about this any more ? I think it would look cool and give all the images a very professional look, you could give each one a slight personalisation with an approriate looking colour / font ? Just an idea though

Great work!
And I will steal an idea from you...
For Futer challenges I will post a template that ALL artists will have to use for WIP.
The template bill be based on the one you created.
Later!

Now I'm getting into this thing I thought I'd better check the rules, so inevitably I have a question.
We are required to submit 3 orthographic renders specified as TOP, SIDE, BOTTOM. My own chosen subject is a bicycle hub gear, a cylindrical device, so my TOP and BOTTOM views would be identical and so might a SIDE view, unless of course I interpreted that as an END view. In such circumstances would my entry be invalid if I only submitted two orthographics, a TOP/BOTTOM/SIDE plus an END view? I'm nitpicking about the SIDE/END terminology but my question is really about the number of views.

im afraid everyone's entry will be invalid if its better than mine regardless of how many views you post ..
the side/top/bottom/etc rules are pretty standard for all the HMC's. I notice that quite often people post, say a bottom view, of their model when there's nothing to see except maybe a circle.
If both sides are identical then there's no real point 'cos you could just post the same image twice anyway ..
sufficient, i think, to post enough images to show you model clearly, and to prove its actually 3D ....

Umm, I have a second question to do with WIP attachment limits.
First time I tried to upload a WIP image it was refused because there was a limit on the file size for a jpg. Cannot remember what the limit was but it was just under 100kb. Ever since I have prepared and uploaded 'optimised' jpg's, but I see others with images much larger than that.
Also, in my UserCP > Attachments I seem to have very limited space for these, see attachment.
How so? I mean I realise there must be limits drawn somewhere, but I seem to be struggling.

@ - Avgas - I've not used the attachment feature in this forum. I think what you are seeing is that a lot of people host thier pics on sites like ImageShack and Photobucket. Then they use the (square bracket) IMG (square bracket) (URL of photo) (square bracket) /IMG (square bracket) format to include them. You can click on the yellow square icon with a mountain on it or a lot of the time, places like photobucket will give you your IMG tags under your piccie to just copy and paste into your message.
If the rules say they want top bottom and side, then just post it. You've done your part and if its just a mirror image, then so be it.

No problems! Glad to help and good luck in the voting.
Roberto... I'm going to be doing a bit of Photoshopping to do some effects on the skin over the cutaway sections. For this I have a 'complete' outer skin to the Concorde that I will dub over my cut-away version and paint out the skin to make it look fancier.
Do I need to post a seperate ortho shot of the 'complete' version or just the cutaway?
