View Full Version : WIP: Scanning a new kind of world
flintstone73 12-02-2008, 09:54 PM Hi. My first 'WIP' showing up here. :-)
It's showing kind of a new found planet exploration, somewhere in the surrounding of
our neighbouring stars. First i wanted to add some big spaceship to the scene, but then i
decided to let out these huge non-humanoid search-robots, and in the distance their mothership, searching for any kind of lifeform on that planet.
At the moment i do not know exactly if i'll add some more objects to the scenery.
Comments are highly appreciated!
I also posted it here to push me a bit to finish that somewhere in the next few
lightyears! :-)

I like the ship and the 'bots. The sky is really well done.
The biggest problem here, is one of perspective. It is almost impossible to get any real sense of scale with this image, because it is not earth, and you have no humans to gauge against how we perceive size.
Values could help, but then you are talking a much more complex matte painting, and this is actually nice as a more simple scene.

Ok, thanks for your point of view! That perspective issues haven't reached my mind,
before your posting come in :-)
Well, i tried to solve the issue, bringing in some more objects in the middle of the picture. In form of some kind of robot army. Either not planned right from the begin, i think it gives the picture that more of perspective relations and looks more interesting, or what are you meaning?

Yes, exactly!
But your perspecive sizes are incorrect:

Ok, i cared alot about your hint, and to optimise the perspectives i just opened
my favoured 3D-Application, and made up some kind of boxes around the objects.
Then i could better handle the approximate distances of the objects.
It's kind of difficult i think to estimate the correct perspective sizes over the
distance. Can you tell me what's the common way of doing that in a 2D
Application like photoshop? Use some kind of perspective grid?
Attached is a picture with the blended in help boxes generated from my
3D-Application (Cinema 4D).

Perspective is definitely something you should learn if you want to improve this, just grab a book about it, most likely there are some free ones you can find,. Sorry I'm not more helpful. I think the real issue is the guys in front are bigger than the tank in front of them.

Ok. Long time i haven't done anything on this picture.
However from time to time i improved it a bit, and now decided to state it as finished, regardless of possible perspective errors in it.
I know i still have to learn. We all have to. :-)

I like the tanks inside tanks idea. I think the carrier tanks should be more distinct, specifically that the cannon should not be there. Rockets, machine gun, or AP cannons would look right

I wouldn't call this finished. The start looked promising! Now it looks like you had no concept to it and just filled out the empty space. Fight it to the end ;) and you'll end up with a nice piece!
