View Full Version : Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Zachary Hogan
Superbacon 12-02-2008, 10:27 PM Zachary Hogan is entered in the "Steampunk Myths and Legends" update: View Challenge Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/view_entries.php?challenger=17135)
Latest Update: Final Image (sadly, a few minutes too late)
Even though I was too late to enter the challenge, I thought I should share the final image.
Put together from two renders, one for the background (everything excluding the reeds and lake), then a second render using the first as a backdrop, rendering the reeds, lake, bridge and 'fighting' Gandalf over the top. A couple of hours in Photoshop to touch up any errors, applying a couple of photo-filters to give contrast to the two halves of the image and giving it an unsharp mask.

Just a quick mock of my scene. Based on the scene from Tolkein's "The Lord of the Rings" in which Gandalf travels through the Shire in his horse-drawn cart.

A work-in-progress of the mechanical horse.

Added more framework and gears, also threw in a chimney.

Haha, I like the idea of a robot Gandalf! Your horse looks good so far, I really like the exposed gears on the underbelly. The chimney looks strange to me, though. I think it could be a more interesting shape.

The third stage of my horse - the basic head-shape is finished, complete with windup handle. Now to detail this beast.

First render including the newly modelled cart. Still heavily WIP, with loads more detail still to be added. Fireworks are going to take a LONG time to place.

A very interesting concept! Take it from a certified Tolkien nut; I'm all for exploring modern mythologies. I hope you will go the distance, and I have to tell you that I can't wait to see Mithradir himself! We should definitely do some Tolkinesque conceptual art together if you are interested. Since the release of "The Hobbit" is right around the corner I think that we should give it a go!
:deal:
qmqzing design... I like it a lot!!:buttrock:

Sounds good dude! Sadly, I still haven't finished the books. I've skimmed them, but now I'm going back and reading them cover-to-cover.

First test-render for Gandalf. Still heavily WIP (as you can see, he has no arms and hardly enough innards).

Spent most of this time rigging him. My first fully operational rig, and it's still not finished. I'm slowly getting it working, with a simple leg setup and a probably completely unoptimal arm setup. Getting the pistons moving with the body is probably the easiest bit.

Working on my surrounding scene. Layer-isolated lights to keep the grass lit without over-exposing the windmill and characters. Rendered without particle-grass to save on rendertimes.

5 hour render. I don't know if it was the grass or the water, but I wasn't expecting that.

I had to render the backdrop in 25 parts then put them together in photoshop.
