Hi guys,

Huge update from us at Ballistic/CGNetworks.

The Limited Edition of EXPOSÉ 1 is a special collector's item book. Meticulously hand-bound in a black leather cover, it is limited to 999 copies, each individually numbered and signed by the editors. Quality Quality Quality - The Making of EXPOSÉ
We've gone way over the top. In every way we have pushed the envelope to create the highest quality art book possible. Not only are the individual images works of art but you wouldn't believe how we agonized over and strove to make the page layouts works of art in their own right. This obsession with perfection even impacts things like the choice of background color, paper stock, print processes, finishing varnishes, book binding, packaging -- even shipping!

One thing more -- those images of the Limited Eddition are some renders I did yesterday... they are very close to what the actual book will look like based on samples from the binder -- but we can't guatantee they will be *exactly* the same.

It *really* is hand bound -- you can't automate that sort of binding. The binder gave us the OK to go down and video him at work. We are planning to make a web + video documentary come educational piece on the making of the book... when we get a chance.

hi! Exposé must be incredible! i'm from France, and i'd like to know if i can order the book without any problem. In the page for the billing/shipping adress, ect... there is the state field that i HAVE to fill, but in France there are no states at all... we have something called regions but no states like in US. Laws are the same everywhere in France, so should I consider my region like a state and fill the state field with my region name? and yes, what is the shipping delay? since i just have the money for Exposé, i don't want to take any risk... i hope somebody can help me...
thanx! :)

I got the email, and just now paid for it. :)

I have to say seeing the "render" of the limited is just jaw dropping, really a work of art and perfect to present the work inside!

In fact, I was curious about shipping...because I am sure I will be silly and won't want to mess up my limited edition I was thinking about also ordering a paper-back version as well which I will use to thumb through while keeping my limited all nice and pretty heh. So, if I also order a paper-back would they be shipped together for a bit cheaper or will they be shipped seperate with full shipping. Sorry for the question, I am not cheap, just waaay over my budget already and every dollar counts lol .

Not sure if it's too early for an official "Congrats" on getting this thing put together so fast and still be at the quality it will be at, but who cares. Again, it is just completely beautiful.

Hey man. Just put a "-" in the state if it's blank. We make sure it's required so that there are no problems in the other areas of the world where state is an absolute requirement (e.g. US)

full rez renders of the Limited Edition book are now at

http://www.cgtalk.com/cgtalk_happenings/expose_limited_edition.jpg

quite apart from needing to show very accurately what the book would look like I had great fun whipping up these from scratch, no scanned textures or anything (scanning black leather isn't really a viable option) -- less than a days work and all done in 3ds max with no extra plugins or renderers.

We already have some fantastic shipping rates from FedEx ... we are trying to get them even lower but to reach a point where a single order gets a better rate we need to ship 40Kg of stuff to the one address! -- so orders of a few books will go together, but we all have to pay the same per Kg shipping rates of A$20 per book -- each book weighs about 1Kg.

Thanks for all the compiment -- very much apreciated by everyone who worked on getting the book together.

Does the Number following the order info I.E. Limited Edition 52 on mine, mean I get #52 ??

I think it would be excellent to get the original artists to sign some of the artwork, that would make a truely amazing collectable.

This instant AUD 99 works out to about USD 67 or Euro 57 and GBP 37

Why order now? -- the reason is that had such a strong early reservation for the Limited Eddition that we know the whole run will sell out way before it ever gets of the press. ... and with the hand binding it will take 4 weeks from start to finish just to bind them. So people who get in first will get their books first. If you wait to long you will miss out altogether.

The softcover and harcover edditions wont run out -- and so there isn't the same urgency to get the order page for those up just now -- soon.

Sorry if these questions have allready been asked in a previous thread. Are you guys looking at selling this through any national booksellers like Amazon or Barns and Nobel? Also, are you guys going to make this book like Spectrum where it is only printed for a year untill the next edition comes out and then its gone(untill the current stock is gone). I know spectrum #1-#5 go for like $150-300 USD.

Deke where you been man??? :)

We're not going to sell this first book through Amazon as they demand a straight 55% cut and will slash the book price by 25% to undercut everyone else on the net. This means that for us to recover our costs from production, we have to raise the RRP to over double what it is now.

Secondly, this is going to be an annual book. Hence, the title is EXPOSÉ 1.

Cheers

I didn't pre-order the Special Edition Animal Skin version, I went for the hard cover. I am curious as to how long until the regular hardcover order/payment page is going up? Like: Day's, Week's, Month's? Any clues, or hints? :)

In late July. The books roll off the press on 23rd July and go to the binders to have the covers put on. Then they will be shipped out sequentially - those who order first get their books first.

Uh ... back after a very short nap ;)

OK... it looks like most people are working things out -- thanks to everyone who has been jumping in and answering questions and for all the great compliments :bounce:

I'm going to be a bit quiet for a day as we have a huge task of doing the very final check of the whole book and every image in it before it goes to pre-press tomorrow.

For now though, here are some answers to common questions:

Question: "How do I get it if I don't have a credit card?"

Answer: Find a friend, relative, co-worker or anyone with a credit card who can order it for you.

Question: "Will it be available from normal book distributors and resellers"

Answer: Yes and no. Yes, we already have a number of book store and other reseller enquiries and it will be available from resellers. No. it wont be available from the big book distributors because we would have to almost double the price to put it through them and cover all the production costs at the moment. We do want our books to be available through the big book distributors in the future -- but that's probably going to have to be special production runs of just the softcover edition to a lower standard -- the same content but without the same print process and finishing ... well that's a possibility .

Question: "When will the Softcover and Hard Cover order pages go up"

Answer: As soon as we can. Right now the main delay is getting exact shipping costs for everywhere in the world. We decided to just go for it on the Limited Edition and just eat any losses on shipping to some countries and just set a flat shipping rate. But,
particularly for the cheapest issue - the Softcover - we want exact shipping costs to everywhere in the world. We also want the exact bulk shipping costs. FedEx and UPS are both bidding to get our business and we have pretty good idea of shipping costs to North America and Europe for single units.

Question: " I can't complete my transaction to buy the book"

Answer: argggrrr... it appears to be the banks fault -- so don't panic. It's not you or your credit card. It's either the banks server or some connection into it that seems to not be keeping up when it gets multiple transaction requests at the same time. Needless to say we are less than impressed and will be hassling the bank to fix things pretty quickly -- As soon as we can we want to move to doing all banking in US currency as it's about the closest thing to a global standard. But we can't do that quickly -- trying to get a bank to set up a foreign company account set up with on line trading is not fast or fun.

Wahoo! I just ordered the special ed leather version. Question: My order seemed to go through fine, so am I guaranteed a copy of the book? I know that some online stores don't have running tallies of their current inventory, so an order can be processed without a product in stock to send. Did I get one of the 999 copies?

Thanks.

Argh. :annoyed:

I went to the site and 'reserved' a Limited Edition copy back when you first starting accepting them. To date, though, I've received no e-mails about the release.

By sheer luck, I happened to check the forums tonight, and saw this thread. Good thing, too -- it looks like the copies are going fast.

Went to the site and tried to order, and sure enough, the transaction was refused. Three times.

I've sent an e-mail to info@ballisticpublishing.com as per the instructions on the 'payment failure' page, but geez... :hmm:

Yay! Just ordered a copy for the folks who are, at present, welling up with relief that their son didn't waste his formative years doodling and arsing about on computers after all.

The layouts for the book look ace; it's nice that it's hand-bound too, although I pity the poor bookbinder. D'you think he or she could still work with the stumps left after their fingers have dropped off? ;)

Ok... originally i figured it would be just a book i'd eventually pickup from amazon. But i must admit, once I saw the render of the book cover, i just couldn't let that pass me by!

I figure if I don't eat for a week i could afford this book :P

Anyhow, great job, and I definatly look forward to getting the book.

BTW all the people in the US... its $80 not $120 US!!! 80 includes shipping!!! great deal!!!

BTW is there any way i could get book number '007' or anything else specific... I actually care... funny me

Anyhow, thanks guys and hope this helps to keep cg network alive

I've got good news and bad news for you, Leo...

The good news is, I somehow managed to NOT stick the reservation message in the Trash. I've pasted the relevant portion below.

The bad news is, your e-mail from 14+ hours ago may not have made it to other people as well.

wow, your printing process is... unique? lol :D good work, i want to get me a special edition but i don't know how possible it is, whats the price in canadian?? Anyways its also really really good to hear that Ballistic will be funding CGtalk.com and other sites... great commitment and definatly cuases you to stand apart, you guys are really working the right way, instead of starting a publishing company and waiting for people to need you, you started one and set your self apart right away, whats next? you going to start hiring Cgtalkers to do graphic design and digital media for you? :D (i hope so! lol).

welp God's Blessing on ya all!

Wow, this looks great! I've ordered and I'm looking forward to getting mine.

Only one itty bitty aside - hardly worth mentioning but something to keep in mind for future editions: I wish that the cover image with the little girl was different. I appreciate the art, and it's a fine picture worthy of the book, but this is a book people will want to leave out on the coffee table and some people might look at that image and take it the wrong way... :hmm:

Anyway, I wish you guys huge success with this!

Well, after agonizing for the better part of a day over the US$80 that I'd have to shell out for the book, I finally made the leap of faith and ordered it. :) I can't wait to get this beauty in my grubby little hands. :p

Just ordered my limited edition.
Says there are 671 left at present, so I guess I'm around No. 330

Will have to cut back on spending for a month or two, but Damn! - Just a 'gotta have' book.

Maybe one day, I'll get good enough to apply some work without making everyone fall off their chairs laughing ;) :p

Hi. I have a doubt

I have recibed this "You do not need to order a copy of the Limited Edition, unless you want
extra copies."

Must I preorder a special edition or not? I only recibed a mail and I don´t know if order or not.

Thanks!

Juan,

You got in the book - there are artist copies that are already reserved for people who got in the book at a heavily discounted price.

Only if you want extra copies of the Limited Edition, then you have to purchase it.

We get the "uber special limited artists edition". :applause:

I can't wait for this.. it looks soo amazing.

And guys.. seriously.. GET IT! I have the feeling the price is under it's value! (In switzerland you pay about this much for a softcover edition of an artbook!)

Yea -- to be honest we messed up a little on the price for the Limited Edition -- it should have been way more expensive ... but then we thought, what the heck, as long as we don't actually loose money it gives us a nice fuzzy warm feeling to provide something of this quality at this price for this very first edition ever of EXPOSÉ. ... that's one of the reasons that we have to sell it directly and we cant adsorb the shipping costs.

Oh, and another thing ... Numbers 1 - 10 are reserved. We are getting special presentation boxes made for these and they will be auctioned as soon as the Limited Edition series sells out.
We expect that the bidding will be fierce and that this will establish a value for the books that is way above the regular selling price -- so by the time people get their Limited Edition books they will already have a market value way over what you paid for them ! ... not that we expect anyone will re-sell them for profit, but it's nice to know you own something that has appreciated in value so fast!

Just can't wait for the artist-limited edition order page....

But I'm wondering if I still can do a bulk order including this artist version so as to get the shipping discount for me and friends.

Ahh, you made an artist version to every person who entered exposé or do I have to order mine as quick as I can to get it?

btw,
by any chance, is there a way to know how many artists from Brazil entered the book? By this time we have 4 known artists in there, but we would be glad to meet more "neighboors", hehe

Ordered mine as soon as I saw the e-mail:) Although I probably have many of the pics lying on the harddrive already, nothing beats sitting on the can with a leather bound book in your hands;) And if an emergency strikes I could use the pages for......NO, strike that last remark, I'd rather use my underpants:)

Everything seems great about this initiative, the price, the printing quality, the money going back into CGtalk:thumbsup: I only hope I can persuade my buddies to also buy a copy. Thanks alot for making this book possible:thumbsup:

Just so people know --

The order number is the agregate order number from our system. Lots of people who ordered the Limited Eddition thought the order number was the number of the Limited Eddition seris -- it's not.

There are still a couple of hundred Limted Eddition books left -- but you want to tell your friends to get in quick as they will probably sell out before the end of the week.

There are plenty (for now) of Soft and Hard cover books.
