Great short, I love the mix of 2D and 3D. The design of the little dragon is great and despite some limitations that I thought he may have you've done an incredible job with his animation. Students pay attention to this short, it shows how keeping things simple can pay off in the end.
Two thumbs up.

awesome! and typicly irish too :) but that's prolly just because of the music.
one thing bothered me though: not all of the sound effects were very nice. some of em didn't really fit into the overall picture, and this worked kinda enstranging. (is that a word? I meant'that they make you cané entirely lose yerself in the story)

the other thing I would like to ask is how do you like the art academy. I started taking my first class there this week and I am going for my BFA in animation. Its hard to get a good Idea about what I can expect in the higher level classes. How was your experience?

let's see...
Add some Lion King, a smidgen of Ren and Stimpy, some Labrynith, and a touch of this and that...oh yea..and cant forget the Geris game. Top it off with a dash of origainality and you got a short there. I'm speaking in terms of acting choices btw. The idea is kinda ok i guess...but a fart joke is a fart joke. Also it drags like crazy when he's at the cliff...I almost turned it off. Believe me, I can bet I'm not the only one who sees it. Keep going. Good work overall.
excellent work, very funny ....... love it how you mixed the 2d and 3d look  kind of reminds me of legend of zeld - the wind waker ------ with the music and all..
beautifully done
Implimentation brilliant, luv the models the scenes, the animation, clever way of avoiding animating "crowd of angry warriors."
Liked the style, though...
...have to agree with fluxgrafx on many points there, particularly the drawn out clifftop anticipation.
but hey I laughed, and felt genuinely involved in the experience.
Call me childish but I kinda like fart jokes, and reckon there are still plenty of kids out there two who do as well.
I'll be keeping an eye (twitching included) out for more.
Cheers,

Thanks HowardM,
All the 3d stuff was done in Maya and the compositing in After Effects. The backgrounds and textures were painted in photoshop.
About the nice smoke.....well, I cheated a little bit and used some smokes from the Artbeats cds:)

Awesome? Yes indeed....the only bit that didn't quite do it for me was the fact that he seemed to linger at the edge of the cliff for too long before actually coming up with ways to escape. Yes, I am nitpicking, but there isn't much else wrong with it. Technically it's a proffesional piece of animation. :applause:  :applause:

Wonderful mix of 2&3d. Love the poses, the 'dilema' cognition especially. Thinks:
Perhaps the "running away against the sky" shot, looking up at the character could have some more mis-en-scene to tell us how quick he's moving?
I found myself wondering "what's keeping the knights"?
The shot at the end, with the dragon doing the show...perhaps one more arrow shot at him?
Obviously a brilliant shot, all told. Congratulations

hey...short is great as i quoted before. a friend of mine and i were doing some chatting about the subject of animation as usual and something intersting came up. the title of your short "Run, Dragon, Run".... any similarity to "Run, Lola, Run"?? the title i mean of course.

06-29-2003, 09:00 AM
Hey biriba,
Thats a trully awesome job u have done huh??!!!:buttrock:
Even if it wasnt your first, it would be still great!
I would like to point something out for the sake of the logic of this forum, to receive critiques that maybe improve your work. (well... or maybe not ) :))
The entire project is far perfect by me, but the climax kinda lacks intensity and that breath-taking feeling of : "go, go stupid dragon, do something, the enemies are too close, move your ass!!!" We have too much time to watch the dragon slowly change betwen expressions and look backwards and forward and we kinda forget about the enemies that are coming, and i think it breaks the flow of the animation a little. Even for a "slow-ass", and "slow-minded" dragon, he could act a little faster.
Maybe your intentions were about doing the stuff just like that, "slow-minded dragon and slow running enemies". But personally i prefere a most intense and breathtaking shooting.
No geral, parabéns cara, muito muito show de bola esse seu curta, prova q vc vai ser um mestre animador q vai escolher onde trampar!!

Geeez. Why isnt this on the front page? (or was it and I missed it?)
Nice job! I do agree that it got slow at one point, but it was timing, not the dragon's movement that slowed the pace. Still, nice work. I love the '3D' and '2 1/2 D' mix.

One of the best shorts I have seen in a while. The punch line may be somewhat crude, but it still made me chuckle.
The execution is excellent. Some possible timing issues on the ledge as other have noted, but I don't think it is anything major.
Beautiful expressions and 2d / 3d intergration. :)
