Well, I've decided to enter this thing. Here's a head- I'll post some sketch concepts soon, just haven't had time to scan 'em.
I'll work on this lady this week, next week I hope to start on Pygmalion.

Here's some doodling I did last week. I'm still not sure of the setting or the composition/pose- I'll be working that out soon, I hope.

Likewise- I can't wait to see what you do with Pygmalion- I expected to find a lot of people doing it, it seemed obvious. Well I'll be checking back here often, I like what you're doing already, the "keys" on the head bring to mind the keys of an old typewriter.

Old typewriter indeed, and I textured the keys yesterday. Here's the current state- things are going slower than hoped and I'm thinking I'd better focus on composition for a while before I go and model a ton of detail that won't show in the final image (like that detail work around the upper chest). Still not sure about the plasma-breasts; might just pust some bolted bronze orbs in there.

This is ridiculous! She looks like she could exist already. Amazing amount of detail, and hilarious usage of the electric ball.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone.
So I made this little mockup today and I'm pretty happy with it. Before anyone asks, I'll explain the smoke and warpage; this Pygmalion has been drinking too much absinthe. Galatea is a hallucination. There, cat's out of the bag, I ruined it.... My hope is to make the space feel like a Victorian inventor's hippy shag den. Erm, maybe not.

Got the hat in! Well, here's the pose- lots of little tweaks to do, things to add, lighting to adjust.... Galatea doesn't have any of her turbosmoothed parts turned on (saving render time a bit). Hope to post more tomorrow.
Feedback is still welcome! (caugh! ahem!)

Made a few props. Some minor changes on Galatea's face. Next up, smoke.

This is getting pretty close. Any thoughts about the smoke? I'm thinking about making a hazy sepia-toned border and adding some steam here and there.
Thanks for the latest feedback- any chance of sqeezing out a bit more?

It's really, really neat. I like the high contrast with black and white. I really like how you designed her. It's really a shame we can't see the keys on her head a little more in that pose. It will be hard to tell she is a typewriter without having all your milestones available. Maybe if she tilts her head at tiny bit toward us? I don't know how hard it would be to do that so don't worry about it if you have no time.

Yeah, the keys... that was a tough call. I played around with a couple of angles, but really wasn't happy with any. In the end I just decided to focus on this angle, and later I'll make a rear-view rendering. I don't know, maybe eventually I'll get around to making the 'shop' background I'd planned originally, and maybe I'll explore other poses, but I find myself out of time.

I think I'm just about done here, unless someone's got some great suggestions that won't take more than a few hours to pull off. I changed the angle a little, desaturated some stuff, added a bit of grain, cleaned up some render glitches... now I'll see if I can download that marvelous Uploader.

As someone else who is doing the Pygmalion myth I wanted to compliment you on your work. You have gotten a LOT further than I have and I would love to see your background finished as well.
joolz

Greyother, Coldrum- thanks, very much! I'd really like to do the background, I admit it. It would tell so much more of the story, and would look so much more finished... alas, I took a job, and it started this week and there's just no way. Not by the deadline, at least.
It's been a fun project, all the same, and I really look forward to the next challenge.

I was thinking about submitting the rear view, too, but it seems you can't have two entries in the same category. Bummer. Maybe I could combine the two in the final image. Anyway, I was looking at the rules and I saw this-
Q: Are we allowed to use web downloaded textures?
A: Yes, but you must credit everything you use. Anyone caught not crediting material, contributors or inspirational works will be disqualified.
Hmmm. In that case, I should at least show some of the inspiration for this piece- something I should've been doing all along. Here are a few pics found just surfin' around. The rug is Turkish, about 300 yrs old. The table is a modern copy based on Victorian designs. The glass and spoon are basic absinthe fare. The Crandall typewriter was the driving inspiration for Galatea, along with the "Hansen Writing Ball".
