This will be fun. It's been sometime. I started with a sketch of the steam creature. I want it to be a robot but at the same time take on the characteristic of a scorpion. It will become more steampunk like as it evolves. Good luck to all.

More polished version of my original sketch. I also wanted the perspective of the subject to be more dynamic. The steampunk elements will take shape when I further develop the subject.

The Scorpion is completely across the sky from Orion. When Scorpio rises, Orion sets. You might think that these two constellations had nothing to do with each other but you would be wrong. Orion, handsomest of men and greatest of hunters, was anathema to Diana who among her other attributes was both protector of maidens and the protector of fauna. Diana saw Orion as a menace to both her maidens and her forest animals. However, Orion was far too great a hunter to be taken down by any ordinary animal. So Diana created a special animal, the Scorpion, whose sting while painful and possibly dangerous to most men, was instantly fatal to Orion. Orion was laid low, but when both he and the Scorpion who bit him were raised to the stars, Orion fearing a repeat keeps his distance from his nemesis.

I flushed out more of the scorpion and started the concept for the background. It's still early but the steampunk elements like the nuts and bolts will come into play later on.

I started adding some color to the art. I'm also working on the nuts and bolt and some of the steampunk elements that will be more prominent in the future. I'm also thinking of adding some cars rolled over and crushed. My art will also include orion at some point in theforeground.

I started painting in more of the detail and giving it more of a nuts and bolts steampunk look. Most of the work I do at this point involves the brush tool and smudge tool. The smudge tool works great to push and pull the colors around the page. At this point I need to start working on the other character Orion. Let me know what you guys think thus far.

At this point I'm continuing to add much more detail to the background and scorpion. I'm also using larger brushes to ruff in the sky. I'm also working on Orion and the battle they will fight. At this point I want the two coming face to face for the first time. I'm also working on the composition to make it as dynamic as I can. I think the values and composition are starting to come together.

I'm not much of a 3d artist so to add a touch of realism I like to wrap texture maps around my objects much like a 3d artist will. The only difference is I need to push, pull, smudge, blend and paint the textures so that they bring another dimension of realism to 2d art.

You're progressing nicely. Nice textures so far, and the reflections are lovely and playful for the eye. I'm wondering though what kind of weapon the scorpion has? Perhaps it would be fitting with something projectile-ish, since its made to sting orion?
Anyways, keep it up. You'll be tough competition ;) :P

Hey that is brilliant, loving the way this is coming together. It's looking really good but, imo, I'm not sure if pushing in the camera in on your latest image is the way to go though. It feels kind of forced and you're cutting too much of the scoprion but that's just my personal oppinion :) The gun stinger doesn't bother me much though.
The whole thing's looking really good though and I'm definitely going to keep an eye on your entry.

Not that I'm an expert, but the design and concept for the maind Scorpion character seems a little weak and under developed. Compared to a lot of the entries for this competition there is very little development or understanding of the form. I'd propably try a few thumbnails of different shapes or styles for the machine and add a few more steam punk elements ... It's looking a bit vague.

I have been adding more details to the scorpion and defining the buildings in the background. So much more to do. My brain is getting tired so I think I will call it a night.
Impressive picture and nice story. The earlier sketch with the Orion silhuette in the foreground actually presents a quite strong composition, highlighting the conflict. The robot looks fairly modern though, as does the environment (especially the cars but also the buildings). Did you intend to give only the Scorpion (and maybe Orion?) a steampunk appearance?

Having Orion in the foreground helps a lot with the composition and creates added depth to the art. I'm looking for a staged battle in modern time with the two steampunk characters. I may experiment with the buildings and make them more art deco. Thanks for the great feedback. It always helps to get good advice to push my concepts along. Thanks

Close up view of Orion taking shape. At this point I use the brush tool with the square chalk brush number 60. Adding color at 100 percent. I then use the smudge tool to push pull an move the paint around to make creases and other clothing details. Most of my art consists of the chalk brush and the chalk brush for the smudge tool in photoshop.

wildcory1

I just use the standard chalk brush 60 It gives the best painterly strokes in my opinion. I don't use any custom brushes.

Any changes to opacity or flow? This technique sounds like it could be useful for conte like half tone sketches. Although I find it really awkward to draw on a wacom board.

Beautiful design and execution so far, and a nice solid composition, too. That giant mech is super! Orion is taking shape, but right now his pose seems to be somewhat lacking in energy. To me he reads like a street-person who is shuffling off towards to robot, not someone who would be about to battle it. What about having his weapon cocked and ready to fire off at the scorpion instead of just by his side? Good luck with him!
wildcory1
12-14-2008, 04:12 PM
For the smudge tool I keep the strength around 95 percent. for the chalk brush tool I will change the opacity at times when I'm working on shadows and full strength when I'm looking for hard edges and more details. I have been using Walcom tablets for years at home and at work and it only takes a short amount of time to get use to.

I started to play around with different poses of Orion some action poses with his bow drawn back ready to fight. After reviewing I was still drawn toward the original pose. You would almost expect to see Orion with his bow drawn back ready to fight. However Orion looks defeated. In the store the scorpion was created to be more powerful then Orion. The city is destroyed the fight is over.

Not a big fan of the composition, to be honest with you. The foreground figure is very obstructive and limiting the way in which the eye can travel through your painting. It seems these foreground elements are very much a 'thing' with you, having looked through your cgportfolio (which I loved by the way). But in this case I think perhaps moving the figure to be sat on the car to the right or changing the aspect to a more panoramic vista will help.
I don't mean this to sound scathing, just constructive. Hope you find it helpful.

As an artist and designer we live in a subjective world. As an artist you have to pick and choose what subjective comments are valid in making improvements and I'm just not feeling it from yours to be honest. Thanks for the feedback

I reworked the tail on the scorpion. It felt to modern so I gave it more of a true steampunk feel. I'm also zooming in on the scorpion and really creating the details that will polish off the art. This step also takes a lot of time. Enjoy and let me know what you think. Thanks
Love this concept, looking forward to seeing how you approach the finish/polish.

Excellent work. It has a strong sence of depth, feel of the atmosphere and mood.

The over all response was that Orion needed to have is bow drawn. I revised him so that he had more action with his bow drawn. I then got a response that this could be a david and goliath story with a young boy throwing a rock at the steampunk scorpion being goliath. The nice thing about the boy is that he lightens the mood and gives a nice twist to my normal run and gun kind of stories. Let me know what you think.

So i changed the character to a little boy. He brings a fun and not serious mood to the illustration. I have also changed my story to David and Goliath. I also made some changes to the tail of the steampunk scorpion. I added a polly system at the back of his tail and made it more steampunk. I also changed the steam exhaust on the back. The old exhaust looked like a tuba. Let me know what you think.

12-27-2008, 11:18 PM
Thanks Sida
I was thinking the same thing. The building on the right feels a little modern but at the same time it's kind of a clash between modern times and vintage times. Old technology raising havoc on todays city. Sometimes the best technology is still the gold old fashion technology.

At this point I'm adding more details to the building and background. I created some texture brushes to paint on the textures of the buildings. Im also sharpening the buildings a the same time pushing them into the background with atmosphere. I will continue to cleanup the scorpion and the boy in the foreground. I also punched up the color saturation. Almost home.

Hey I like the overall image and the nice twist with the boy there. But I just felt that the boy at the foreground looks "too" painterly/unrefined when compared with the rest. Since when things get closer to the screen it should have more details, but right now I feel the scorpion looks more neat and refine and yet still maintain the painterly quality, so I thought the boy should receive more attention too, and perhaps give him some steampunk element to hold on too. Anyway, great work:)

Nice work, and interesting changes since the last time I looked in! Before you had the claws, the legs read quite clearly (or at least the front two did.) Now the screen-right leg is really hard to read. Maybe darkening it a bit so that it contrasts more with the building behind it could help. Good luck!

Cory, I really admire the way you've kept this fresh and alive as a painting.
I've been looking in from time to time, and it's interesting seeing your decisions adn changes of mind - and what you've left out. (I really liked the Dikensian character with the top hat at one point).
You have a really well thought out composition. If I might comment, the car on the right is floating a bit - needs something to ground it, and to separate it a tad from the bush.
I wonder if you could separate the foreground more from the mid-ground by laying more of a shadow across, which will also bring the boy forward more.
Fantastic colours and gestural paint work.
Good luck!!

Goliath was a three story tall mechanical scorpion. In Greek mythology the Scorpion was a monster summoned at the will of a wrathful goddess to create destruction. No soldier or arm would try to stop the goliath beast.
David was a young shepherd boy who believed in god. He said, "The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." David took his his large smooth stone grasping it tightly throwing it at the evil Goliath.......... well I think we all know what happens next.

Congrats on finishing ahead of time! This came out really great, and has a really nice painterly feel to it. Are there any close up details you have of the work? I also like how you combined different legends into one.

Love your style, very impressive!
I started with the David and Goliath idea too but I could not make a concept work without the title text stating David and Goliath to let the viewer understand what the story was about. I even made a giant 3D Mr. Peanut as Goliath and a Robot Popeye as David but things were just getting too strange.
Best of luck!

Ralph~ I agree I started off with another idea that evolved into David and Goliath. Thanks for the comments!

I too like this one. I am drawn back to the human drama, which I don't get out of many of the other images.
