I'm in need of some advice and help here. My Max 5 always crashes (disappears without error msg) when I click on the vertices option after I convert the subject to editable mesh, it doesn't crash for the other options like edges, polygons etc.
whY???

I think that the reason is not the max, but the $@$@% windows, !@#!#$, microsoft %#$, suxxx!

My max 5 was crashing a LOT. Then I went through my scripts directory and got rid of all the scripts and added them back in one by one. Fixed the crashing... Something in there is probably jacking with editable mesh.

max 5 works just fine in XP (I'm using Pro though). Not sure about max itself but other CG apps insist (Softimage for example) on only Pro and not Home Edition. This because of networking functions and licensing protocols.

Have you contacted your authorized discreet dealer or discreet support directly with the problem?

And I'm sure you've upgraded to 5.1 as well?

When I first got into Max (3.1) it crashed a few times. I figured out it was the video card drivers. so whenever I get a new Max or video card I try out a few drives till I get the compatable one.

As a result I never crash...even when I bog down my scene with ultra high polys it will crawl to the point that it takes 5 min to be able to exit the program but still it doesn't crash.

2000pro btw.

3-DZealot. Wow. Great job. Been watching the progress. Takes me back to my studies on Durer, Michelangelo, and other great artists.

Yippee, Ki, Yay...going for the gold...Keep it up!

I run Max 5.1 just fine under Win XP Pro. I did have trouble with it crashing before getting the right display drivers setup, though. Probably best to install the latest drivers and probably best to use OpenGL too because I've had trouble with Direct 3D.
Get the 5.1 update, install latest Vid drivers, then you should be good to go.

Oh, BTW, if you still have trouble after doing those things, take a look on Discreet website to see which vid cards they support. It's possible that your card will never work well with Max.
Be sure to shutdown any background programs that may be conflicting. They just add more variables when your trying to troubleshoot.

Adios,

thanks corgalore for ur advice.....
just find it weird that this only happens in editable mesh, n not in editable poly.......anyway wut's the difference betw. em?
N i'm not workin with high poly stuff here, even a sphere crashes!
weirder is that it does not crash, when I convert it to editable poly, then to editable mesh...! weird stuff...is this a bug or glitch?

Have you install any free/beta plugins by any chance??
It might be something that modified your max's edit mesh... Don't know if it's possible, but you may never know.

Have you tried running MAX in software mode instead of Direct X and Open GL?

Worst case scenario, if nothing works, reinstall your MAX with no plugins, no script and try to see if edit mesh still crashes.

Good luck
