Ok, i think we shall put it on SATURDAY, 13th December. 7pm.
Meeting place will be at city hall train station, at the exit gantry. I will try to take some pictures and post it here of the meeting place.

Dinner, meet-up will be held at Cafe Vic, Carlton Hotel.
http://www.carlton.com.sg/dining_cafe.htm

Google Map on location. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=3+Temasek+Boulevard,+Singapore,+Singapore+03,+Singapore+%28Suntec+City%29&daddr=76+Bras+Basah+Road,+Singapore,+189558,+Singapore+%28Carlton+Hotel+%28Singapore%29+Pte+Ltd%29&hl=en&geocode=Cf5Z5_umL5JGFUTDEwAd8cEwBiFmlIRcyXFaNw%3BFSvGEwAd0KkwBiHxdfePs7OwoQ&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=1.294174,103.855584&sspn=0.015918,0.027895&ie=UTF8&ll=1.297595,103.856227&spn=0.007959,0.013947&z=17) ( from suntec to carlton hotel)
-those walking or staying nearby can get to the train station through city link. City Link is a underground walkway, connecting suntec city mall and city hall train station.

Reservations will be confirmed at the end of the day and I will opened a new thread when everything is confirmed.

Please bring ample (enough) cash.
Payment is only through cash or credit card.(visa, masters, American Express)

Those with singapore cell phone numbers, please email or pm me your numbers. If not, you can pm to request my cell phone number.

Please confirm your attendance here. Almost a week left for siggraph Asia!I had already made a reservation.

As promised, here are some photos to help you along.

If you are taking train, please alight at City Hall interchange and proceed to the exit gantry. If you are lost, follow the crowd! :D
This station is widely used, so do not worry!

After you exit from the gantry, you will see this area. Please do not go into CITYLINK. Proceed to the escalators, or stairs which is straight ahead, right in front of you.

After which you will be at this area.

Down the steps...

Look out for the sign, which is RAFFLES CITY shopping centre. It is located above, so look up!
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f93/raylistic/sign.jpg

and you have arrive at the meeting place! See you!

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f93/raylistic/meetingVenue.jpg

I will be waiting at the left side, near the glass doors, as seen on second picture. I will be wearing jeans, not sure about shirt yet.

Please don't be LATE, we will be waiting at most for extra 15 mins, which is around 6.15pm. I will be taking attendance as per the people registered here.

If you are late, just ask around for directions to carlton hotel. Very near, less than 5 mins walk.
Once there, cafe vic is on your left.
I have place a reservation under my name, Mr Raymond.
The cafe staff are already notified of your arrival.
So do not worry and see you guys there!

Latest Update: Time has been change to 7pm!

Hi

I am in.

but I recommend if we make it at 7pm (why? to take a little more time in Siggraph Exhibition)

I which if you send your mobile number to by e-mail or private message

and I Have one more question about the food in Carlton Hotel is it "HALAL" or is not?

raylistic
12-02-2008, 01:34 PM
I'm afraid it is not halal. The meat is the halal, but the preparation (cooking) is not. If there is a strong request for halal restaurant, i will do a scout around.

Artsboy

A practical question:

I assume ATM's are readily available in Singapore, so I don't need to change to some S$ prior to leaving good o'le Sweden, right?

Is it generally a "cash" society or "credit card" society?

I ask this because sometimes you are surprised; for example, such a "modern" country as Germany, many places you end up actually preffer cash and frown at credit cards, whereas in Sweden, I pretty much never use cash for, well, anything. I have some rotting swedish bills in my wallet but I don't remember when I used one last ;)

Both mate. In fact you can use credit card for almost everything even cabs/taxis. But you cant use credit card for public transport. Bring cash along. Money changers are everywhere, even at suntec mall. Preferably US Dollars or Euros would be good. But most currencies are available. Let me know what other info you need! I never been to sweden before although i watch on tv on the sweden national soccer team. They are good. :buttrock:

Also, thanks for the great information on currency. I myself was worrying a bit because I was confused about it. Looks like I'll be just fine bringing my credit card and paying for things with that and, if I need cash, I can always get it from an ATM?

Both mate. In fact you can use credit card for almost everything even cabs/taxis.

Groovy. Sometimes you can't use credit cards for taxis in the US. That's bizzare, isn't that supposed to be a developed country ;)

Money changers are everywhere, even at suntec mall. Preferably US Dollars or Euros would be good.

Oh I have both of those, my question was more "do I needa actual singaporean dollars" (I guess that's the currency, right?)

But most currencies are available. Let me know what other info you need! I never been to sweden before although i watch on tv on the sweden national soccer team. They are good. :buttrock:

I've never been to singapore so that makes us even. I'm actually about to board the plane in an hour+ from now....

Well even a developed country can get into a financial trouble. No one is better.

yes, you need actual singapore dollars. (SGD) :)

I've never been to singapore so that makes us even. I'm actually about to board the plane in an hour+ from now....

I know this came kinda late but if any of you are here in singapore early, theres a couple of talks over at Nanyang Polytechnic just before the actual siggraph asia.

Introduction to Houdini & Conquering Production Challenges with Houdini
Tuesday, December 9
3.00pm - 5.00 pm
Theatre for the Arts (TFA) NYP
Nanyang Polytechnic, 180 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8

This lecture presentation will cover a basic introduction to Houdini software. Topics include: Houdini 9.5 interface, modeling, and basic procedural effects.
Established in 1987, Side Effects Software Inc. is a world leader in the development of advanced 3D animation and special effects software for use in film. Side Effects Software leads the field of procedural animation with its unique, award-winning Houdini technology.
Houdini is used by numerous digital content creation leaders including: Disney Feature Animation, PSYOP, Framestore-CFC, Asylum FX, The Mill, Method Studios, C.O.R.E., Digital Domain, Rhythm and Hues, and Sony Pictures Imageworks among others.
Houdini is used in the various feature productions like Ghost Rider, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Meet the Robinsons, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Spider-Man 3, Surf's Up, Transformers, X-Men 3: X3 and Superman Returns.
About the Speaker
The instructor for this presentation is David Robert who is currently working with Side Effects as Senior Production Specialist and Houdini Guru.
Robert works cross-functionally across the organization interfacing the best that Side Effects has to offer with clients world wide. He opened the San Francisco satellite office to evangelize Side Effects technology and provide business and technical intelligence to key Industry decision-makers.
His previous professional experience and in-depth understanding of his client's needs make him the ideal client relationship manager representing the perspective and goals of Side Effects' customers with both passion and integrity.
As a 3D Technical Director for 20th Century Fox's Blue Sky | VIFX studio, Robert created high-end visual effects on a variety of feature films:
Aliens3, The X-Files movie, Face-off, Volcano, The Shining (remake), Doctor Doolittle and others.
In his role as Character Animator, Robert created the climactic finale of the original BLADE movie : (demonic "wraith" aviaries) under the vigilant direction of the Animation Supervisor and Director.
During a Creative R&D role: Robert teamed up with Rob Gardner creating physiology-based alien anatomy and musculature design implementation on the pilot "Planet Ice", FOX's first 3D CG feature, later renamed and released as "Titan A.E." (20th Century Fox)

Double Negative (UK) - A Showcase of Digital Visual Effects
Wednesday, December 10
3.00pm - 5.00 pm
Theatre for the Arts (TFA) NYP
Nanyang Polytechnic, 180 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8

About Ken McGaugh (Head of 3D):
CAREER HISTORY
Ken started developing ground breaking VFX tools at ILM in 1996. In his
four years there as Technical Director, he developed the now
industry-wide technique of ambient occlusion and ambient occlusion
texture baking. This led the way for a production-friendly image-based
lighting approach. This was first used in production for ILM’s work in
Pearl Harbour. Additionally he was heavily involved in the ground
breaking techniques developed for water in Deep Impact and Amistad.

Ken then moved to DN where he was instrumental in developing volumetric
underwater environments for Below and creating a robust pipeline capable
of rendering significant amounts of photo-real full frame CGI.

In his year and a half at WETA, Ken’s leading role in sub-surface
scattering techniques and shader development for Gollum, has already
earned him a VES Award and a Technical Achievement Academy Award.

After working behind-the-scenes for a couple of years developing DN's
colour and image pipeline, Ken moved into compositing and then VFX
supervising. Ken is now Head of 3D at Double Negative, managing 230+ staff and developing the Department.

About Kath Roberts:
Katherine started at Double Negative over 6 years ago after completing an undergraduate degree in Maths & Computing and a Masters in Computer Animation. She has worked on numerous films including The Chronicles of Riddick, Batman Begins, World Trade Centre and several of the Harry Potter films, specialising in shader writing and render pipelining on both a show and company-wide level. On Hellboy II, she was the overall shading lead, and also worked more specifically on the Golden Army sequence with Graham Jack.

About Graham Jack:
After studying Cybernetics and Control Engineering at Reading University, Graham started his film career at the Magic Camera Company working on Lost in Space, as a pre-vis animator. He later went on to freelance on TV documentaries and promos, allowing him to gain well-rounded experience of the film and media industries.

Graham joined Double Negative in 2002 as a 3D Artist where he worked in that capacity and later as CG supervisor on various films. In parallel to this he is responsible for setting up the company’s shading pipeline, which was created initially for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and fine tuned on the recent film, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Graham is currently CG Supervisor on Angels and Demons.

About Eugenie von Tunzleman:
Eugenie has been working in visual effects for five years, specialising in fluid dynamics. She has contributed to films such as Batman Begins, World Trade Center and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and led the fluid effects work on Hellboy II: The Golden Army. She is currently working on The Prince of Persia, due for release in 2010.

Double Negative (UK) the premier visual effects company will promoting their company at Siggraph Asia 2008. 4 expert reps from DNEG's 2D/3D/VFX Dept will be presenting their showreel and know-hows at TFA. This is a FREE public lecture with Q & A. Come down if you can make the time on Wednesday, Dec 10 from 3-5pm.
pls note the autodesk user group party starts at 5pm right after this talk, so you probably need to see which is more important.
It takes probably abt 20 odd mins to get from Nanyang polytechnic to Clarke Quay where the autodesk user group is held

Autodesk User Group timing
Registration: 4:30 – 5:00 pm
User Group: 5:00 – 7:00 pm
Party: 7:30 – 10:00 pm

How to get to Nanyang Polytechnic (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Nanyang+Polytechnic%2C+180+Ang+Mo+Kio+Ave+8%2C+Singapore+City%2C+Singapore) - click for google map
For those taking the train/SMRT service, drop off at Yio Chu Kang MRT and the school is within 10 odd mins walk away from the train station.

hi, for those we went for the meet up at carlton hotel, please help me to answer this few questions:

1. Is the place alright? Too crowded, too noisy? Ambience?
1. Is the price for the food alright?
3. Quality of food?
4. Service? I know that the bill take some time but because we split the bill up, so it need some time.

5. If there is another meet up, would you like it to have it at the same place?
6. Further comments?

Thanks for the support once again. I hppe everyone had a great time.

1. Place was great, not crowded at all, we could actually speak. ("Too noisy" applies to the one in L.A., holy crap that was loud!)

2. Food seemed almost cheap, but maybe I got used to the exorbant prices at my hotel, where they charge you $40 if you sneeze ;)

3. Food was great.

4. I think the service staff was very patient with all our juggling, no complaints there.

5. Why not, but do you plan to take the restaurant with you to Yokohama ? ;)

6. All good.

Here's my share of the photos taken.
Sorry for the quality, seems like LG advertise its 5 mega pixel camera without informing us that the CCD Quality sucks.

I have also written a blog on Siggraph here:

Hi Zap, seems like it is a huge contrast between your home and Singapore. Is that your house?

Just to remind the Student Volunteers or anyone else who wants to upload pictures:

When I get home from Singapore I'll make the splash page a little more viewer friendly instead of just the 2 text links.... unless anyone wants to beat me to it.

Only 10,000km and about 30degrees centigrade ;)

That's my greenhouse, in which I grow some herbs, tomatoes, Habanero peppers, and grapes... would be a little bit too tiny for me to live in (and cold, this time of year).

But these are views from my house.

Hi Zap, that is a COOL green house!!!
But man 30 degrees centigrade difference is in my opinion quite a huge one.
However i like the scenery and SNOW... because its been so long since i last touch them.

By the way am saying an early MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE!!! =3

There's a "Daniel Wade" that looks a tad similar on the inside on pretty much every Ballistic book. But I could be totally wrong, don't think I got a card either....

That would be Andrew Plumer, director/CEO of ballistic publishing. I have got his business card. :)
