View Full Version : Achieving a comic-book inked style

Hey all, I was just playing an old ps2 game, Ultimate Spider-man, and I found that I really enjoyed the 3d comic book inked style that they went with for the game -- the characters all looked just like they did in the USM comics. I'm wanting to model a couple of characters for an animation project using that same comic book style, but I'm not sure exactly how to achieve the effect (I'm using 3dsmax 2008).

My first thought was to pick up FinalToon, but before I purchase it I was hoping that someone who has used it could tell me whether or not it would serve my purposes. And I had some questions about it's limitations.. I know that FinalToon has a built in material converter to convert specified shaders into finaltoon shaders, but I'm wondering how it affects normal maps? I use zbrush to sculpt out details for normal maps for my characters, but if I am unable to use them with this inked style, that would lower the amount of detail I'm able to add to my characters. I know that seems strange, as a lot of the detail will be lost in going for an inked 2d-ish effect, but for the lighting and shadows it would be nice if it was able to calculate using the normal map detail.

Any suggestions?

This is the effect I'm trying to achieve:

Thanks in advance!
