Hi welcome to my Steampunk Myths and Legends thread. The main idea is to post as much information related to my creation process as I can not only to register the steps and milestones but to share my (little) knowledge. I also hope to learn a lot in this process and from your threads. So if you have ANY doubts and questions please feel free to ask :D! If you want to comment, give any insight or constructive critic you are most welcome!!!

This would be probably the most text-heavy post of all so if you don't enjoy reading I promisse the next posts will have a lot less text and much more images!

That been sad lets get things started! As this is my first post I would like to reveal the story that is Hercules (Heracles) with quite a bit of steampunk twist. It took me about 4 or 5 days of research to put together and I found it very important as I think a good story is the core of an excellent image or video production.

My interpretation of Hercules myth through a steampunk view takes place in a parallel Victorian age and shows the relationship between two cities: a floating island which is also an industrial enterprise named mount Olympus, in charge of inventing and creating all the technology (steam powered of course) and a normal (unnamed) city that uses some limited technology that was released under the mount Olympus brand. No citizen of the unnamed city could go up to Olympus, it was a law.
The problems begins when a newborn company named Equidna (which in Greek mythology is the mother of the monsters) makes a lot of dangerous steam machines using reversal engineering.
As the ones with the knowledge, the Olympians, can't put their life in peril, Zeus, one of the the most talented and brilliant inventors bring a normal person (living in the unnamed city) to Olympus, to wear a steam powered suit that gives the one wearing it astonishing strength and resistance (sort of a ultra musculature piston-based system) which is called Hercules.
Doing so Zeus provide means for the one "wearing" Hercules to defeat Equidna creations.

I hope it was clear and understandable enough for everybody. this serves as a Background story. The idea is to do a short trailer showing 3 or 4 scenes rather than doing a full movie with beginning middle and end. I hope you have enjoyed the main idea!!!

My next post will be the shooting script, describing more precisely and production-wisely the shots that will made to the final animation.

Hey Scied!

I love the idea of corporations, I like the floating island idea, just like heaven, I like the fact that "Hercules" is a suit!
What I also liked was that you wish to share all knowledge that you will gather through your way, IŽll surely follow your work progress!

Just to avoid another text post which is very boring and not at all appealing I will post the Hercules wearer concept instead of the shooting script... but inevitably the next post should be the shooting script... as I am a big no-no at drawing :sad:... I generated some 3D reference and painted over with lots of patience and will power :D hope you guys enjoy this concept. And for those of you who are really nice at drawing (most of you judging by your ref concept work) I am widely open for suggestions and comments... for those of you who donŽt draw I am equally open too! :beer:

Hey Scied!

I liked the concept from the boy who will use "Hercules". I canŽt wait to see him strong, brave and heroic, using the suit and fighting agaist monsters... he is so... not heroe with this glasses and hat!!! Will be a great contrast, I guess.

This is a concept to get more notion of the Hercules wearer body, for a more accurate modeling in upcoming stages

Hah got home and just realized that my computer at work must have an insane contrast! My character is absolutely flat in my home computer no body details at all! I will see if I fix it as soon as I can!

Cool, man! Looking good so far! Your idea is pretty much a good one for a 2-hour feature-length movie! hehe Hope you can be succinct and boil it down to a nice essence. Good luck with your challenge! This is my steampunk version of Zeus. He is a hardworking genius that develops the Hercules in the first scene and then welcomes the Hercules wearer to Olympo, his above the ground technology factory.

Hey Scied! Beleza? Man, not sure if I'm going to have time to finish mine... again... But hey, just a quick comment on your concepts. They're looking good! But I'd be careful not to use a template so faithfully, ortherwise your characters will all end up looking the same. Zeus, for example.. looks a little too young to have that beard. Some good reference for aged strong characters is Michelangelo. That's a young body. An older man, even if he is fit, looks different, in my opininion.. Curious to see what this machine looks like!

Hi dvelasco, you are completely right, Zeus is a bit templated and there are two main reasons for that, the first is that I can't draw very well so I used the base of the previous character hercules wearer to paint zeus and the second reason is that since we don't have much time to finish the project (1 month more or less) I am doing just one rigging and one skining and settle the diferences using displacement maps... But I will surely look for some Michelangelo refs! Thank you so much for the constructive critics!

So this is the volume model of hercules wearer/ zeus body. Its very simple modeling here, focussing on edgeloops topology and outlining volumes with fewer vertices possible.

This is the WIP of the base mesh I will use to paint both zeus and hercules wearer. This update refers to the head that now is modeled. I would really appreciate some comments! Thanks!

Another base mesh update this time I did some final adjustments to the head, modeled ears, hand, the shirt and pants. the parts in 2D are things I yet need to model to finish zeus so I can start modeling the background scenario and hopefully do my first shot by the middle of the next week.

This is a quick volume model made for the Hydra in 4 hours just for me to better visualize its proportions and make it easier to redesign some aspects.

This is a quick color test to see more or less how the hydra would be.. I am not 100% satisfied at this point... the final version will surely be a bit different.

This is the modeling progress of an important part of the Zeus workshop environment. This pillar is intended to be an all purpose steam powered tool that can provide light, work as kind of a crane and even redirect precise amount of pressurized steam to zeus gauntlet which can connect to this pillar.
