View Full Version : Any tips for exploding heads...
Arcade 04-30-2002, 04:29 PM Hey Everyone!
I have a problem, for a special effects shot I need to fake an explosion of a head.
This is not as sick as it sounds, so does anyone have any good tips or tutorials? I work in Maya by the way...
I've started to work with blobby particles but don't seem to get there...please gimme some nice tips!
Thanks!

a good way may be this
first split your face off into single peaces. you can do this with the scatter command or by hand (depends). then go and turn them into active rigid bodies put a radial and a turbulence field in to your scene, connect the bodies to the fields.
a much more complicated way could be to create first a particle system which describes your explosion (should be with the same types of fields) und then assign each single part of your head (this time not rigid bodies) to a single particle. so you don't need so much particles.
i guess the first one is a very good way and easy to handle. the most difficult part may be to create this parts.
if you need an in depth description for that (step by step) please write.

then you select the type of the particles hit the button
<<Add Attributes for current render type>>
then you will get an attribute threshold. this will change the effect of the blobbies.
step by step (very quick)
1. take your surface
2. effects- create shatter (take surface shatter and change the setting so it fits to your needs)
3. in the settings of shatter make post opperation to be rigid bodies with collision of
4. take your new surfaces (shatter) and apply a radial field and a gravity (so they fall to the ground)
so you have to play with the settings for the fields and you will get your result. if you want to have a ground to collide. just turn your ground object to a passive body and turn on collisions for the shatter parts.
thats it (as fast as possible) hope this helps a bit more.
