first concept art for proposed short film.
Featuring a steampunk interpretation of the final battle between Odin and Fenris during Ragnarok.
this will be a collaboration between myself and Airflow (and possibly a couple more)
11-30-2008, 12:34 AM
that looks cool!. so, what's the sp, is it based on a story?
11-30-2008, 03:42 PM
well, im glad you asked ...
it is being based on the ancient Norse myth of Ragnarok, from Wikipedia :
"In Norse mythology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_mythology), Ragnarök ("Final destiny of the gods) refers to a series of major events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures (including the gods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86sir) Odin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odin), Thor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor), Freyr (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freyr), Heimdall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heimdall), and the jötunn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B6tunn) Loki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loki)), the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water. Afterward, the world resurfaces anew and fertile, the surviving gods meet, and the world is repopulated by two human survivors. Ragnarök is an important event in the Norse canon, and has been the subject of scholarly discourse and theory."
as such we are concentrating on the final battle between Norse god Odin, and Fenris, a large wolf who ultimately kills him.
this is the current script for the animation :
"At a rocky plateau on the edge of the earth, Odin seeks out his nemesis to finally put end to his Omen.
He slows Slepnir, a white blur shifting into the form of an 8 legged horse, they come to a halt at the bottom of the flat cul-de-sac, above them sits a huge stone table, rendered crimson by the blood red moon.
A great Howl is heard, reverberating from some unknown metallic chamber and the nearby rocks again. Odins beard catches the light and ambience of Slepnirs Glass bulb mane, the warm emission does nothing to abate the cold chill that runs through Odin as he sights the great Metal Wolf, Odin redoubles, his spear is hoisted above his head, the tip gleaming
with ruinous intent.
He charges the Fenris, spurring Slepnir up the stepped rock towards the open air and probable victory beyond. He holds aloft Gungnir, the javlin that misses no mark once thrown by him, its tip pointed toward oncoming maw of Fenris, flames churning in the depths there, Odins determines to ram the bright bladed tip into the heart of the wolf by his own hand.
The clash sends Slepnir reeling, his metal hooves carving groves in the rock beneath him, as Slepnir retreats his gaze settles on the fallen god, lying half in the jaw of the wolf
Fenris lifts his head and swallows Odin, who's trailing arm releases Gungnir which spins above and buries itself in the top of the stone tableau a shrill resounding ring emanates from the tip.
It stands there, a solitary epitaph of the mighty god as the sound and wolf slowly retreats beneath it, into the mist, into the shadows, into myth and legend."
Great idea on using Ragnarok. I'm half saying that cause I researched it as one of my possible ideas ;) and half saying it cause the imagery should be amazing. Good luck simjoy and airflow, I'll be watching this with interest.
12-01-2008, 09:25 AM
some further concept art by Airflow whilst we work out the character details
12-01-2008, 06:13 PM
This is cool SimFlo...
Who's idea was an 8 legged horse???
12-01-2008, 07:23 PM
Who's idea was an 8 legged horse??? some Viking who'd drunk to much ale ...
... it was probably just 2 horses standing next to each other ..:D
12-01-2008, 09:13 PM
concepts look amazing. An 8 legged horse will be hard to pull off but considering the team working on it... I think it will work out!
Now stop playing around and get to work :bounce:
12-02-2008, 01:42 PM
An 8 legged horse will be hard to pull off .....
working out the horse just now john, your right a lot harder than a normal horse (twice as hard even .. :) )
We want the design to actually work for animating, not just hang 8 legs out of a cylinder and fake it, but therein lies the difficulty.
in general victorian steam powered machinery was used to drive wheels, chains etc i.e. 360 rotation ..
the horses leg will look a bit odd travelling 360 deg ...
Why not a leg system like that of a train, the wheels are fixed but are driven by pistons—couldn't the leg movements/joint rotations be treated in a similar manner?
12-02-2008, 04:46 PM
woot?:surprised another Odin and the ragnarok, LOL, dude we have the similar myth here, LOL, lets do our best to get these done, your concept are good, cant wait to see the 3D version of it, especially the background mood when you compose the animation, all the best mate :)
12-02-2008, 06:18 PM
Yeah, we checkerd out your entry, it deals with the same gods and mythology, you guys are going for a more character driven approach. Cool work sofar.
12-02-2008, 11:22 PM
12-02-2008, 11:23 PM
12-02-2008, 11:26 PM
Ah, very great to see you here as well.
steampunk all the way right.
nice concepts by the way. Very nice concepts.
cheers and enjoy
12-03-2008, 08:53 AM
A good strong start guys, great visuals can't wait to see some models taking shape. Good luck with your octohorse.
12-03-2008, 03:08 PM
Good luck with your octohorse. thank you. hopefully you will find out later this evening how well thats going ..
there's been lots of this :banghead: a bit of this  and some of that
but i think it heading for this:beer: now ..
12-04-2008, 12:02 AM
nice work there simjoy, interesting to see how the horse goes
best of luck mate:cool:
12-05-2008, 02:20 AM
Thanks, were both working hard.
12-05-2008, 03:32 AM
The idea that you're going for here is neat. Steam punk mechanized slepnir and whatnot? Cool stuff.
The first thing I see wrong is how unclear the storyboard is. I only glanced through it, I didn't stop to analyze each frame, but at a glance there is no indication of what's going on.
Keep bringing out the concept sketches and whatnots of (fenris?) and refine your storyboard and lets see this thing get rolling!
12-05-2008, 10:38 AM
it clear in our minds mate ...
although how clear our minds are is a different matter ...
working hard on it, but this is my mock up of the "octohorse". still details to work out, but basically all 8 legs are independently powered by push/pull pistons rotating the hip/thigh. further pistons will power the calfs and ankle.
steering i a bit of a problem area, but at present we are going for a "tanklike" slow one side to turn approach ..
12-05-2008, 01:03 PM
This sleipnir mock up is turning out quite good.
I might make a suggestion though. To make the design more interesting to look at maybe you could try offsetting the leg sets from each other so that they aren't overlapped so directly. I think it would give a more interesting silhouette.
Just a thought.
Good stuff so far.
12-05-2008, 02:19 PM
thanks, it took me long enough to get the working like that ..
i'll see what i can do ...
started work on the pistons for the leg movement ..
12-05-2008, 06:17 PM
bit more progress on the front hip joint
12-06-2008, 12:39 AM
Nice detail on the hip joint ! The fact it really looks like it would work only adds to the appeal !
12-06-2008, 09:41 PM
thanks Ian ... no update yet, hopefully tomorrow ..
12-06-2008, 11:11 PM
I'm going to be your animator. And no, you dont have any choice in the matter.:D
12-06-2008, 11:11 PM
Looks like we have another team member.
Boone will be our previs artist and doing other general duties.
12-07-2008, 01:30 PM
Yep... very good designs and especially good renders... very sweet ! :applause:
even if that make not enough metal for the moment...
12-07-2008, 09:13 PM
thanks Lemog, early days yet. i'm redesigning the hip joint just now to allow for a wider range of movement ..
So at the moment our team consists of :
plus a couple more lending a hand and support ..
12-07-2008, 09:17 PM
some of airflow's concept art for the Fenris (wolf) character
12-07-2008, 09:33 PM
The jaw is gonna be pretty cool, looking good so far :)
12-09-2008, 03:55 AM
Thanks, our team is getting bigger, and theres more stuff in the pipline.
12-09-2008, 10:33 PM
some more concept work from airflow ..
12-09-2008, 10:39 PM
started working on Slepnir's head today. Body is getting a bit of an overhaul just now.
work on Fenris is about to start in Boone's capable hands and Odin is in previs (concept art to follow)
time is of the essence with this project, but we are pretty much right on schedule at the moment.
12-10-2008, 05:53 PM
some of airflow's concept art for Odin, the modelling of whom has just started by Airflow ..
12-10-2008, 06:38 PM
Nice start with modeling and rendering!
I like Fenris concept very much!
Only storyboard is too blury and i dont see well everything.
Storyboard ofcourse doesnt have to be detailed - its most important for you to do the animation.
12-10-2008, 08:52 PM
yeah, the storyboard is pretty rough, but its just a guide for us really. the story is relatively straight forward, so its just an idea for camera angles and approx timing.
i like the wolfie' could work great in 3d, good luck
12-11-2008, 09:33 AM
Some progress on modelling Odin.
Some Slepnir updates to come shortly, and hopefully a bit of the wolf to show ...
12-11-2008, 09:35 AM
i like the wolfie' could work great in 3d, good luckthanks a lot. i have to agree the wolf looks cool in the concept. hopefully we can convey the same in 3D ..
12-11-2008, 10:13 PM
redesign of Slepnir, bringing the legs more into the body.
12-12-2008, 11:52 AM
No takers then ??
Ok, some further progress with Odin, modelling almost done.
hopefully another update on Slepnir tonight, and maybe Fenris will turn up as well ...
12-12-2008, 08:00 PM
Sorry Simon, overtime for my manager at work prevented me from making a - decent - start on Fenris. Its got my full attention now, so we can all expect to see the first picture of Fenris on Sunday morning - bright and early!
12-12-2008, 08:08 PM
thats cool mate, wasnt hassling you .. were well up on this at the moment anyway ..
,, probably got time to do a directors cut ..
12-13-2008, 03:29 AM
Excellent progress so far everyone.
It would be very cool to fill in the negative/empty space on the joints of the horse with intricate gears and other mechanics. I think it would work well with the overall simple yet effective silhouette you already have. Great job!
Best of luck. I'll be following your progress :wavey:
12-15-2008, 09:11 AM
thanks for your comments, very much appreciated ..
sorry for lack of updates, I've been busy with my kids birthday, and Christmas preparations.
work on Fenris is progressing, i'll post updates later today. also i've some updated Slepnir wip's to post.
We aim to have completed all essential modelling by the weekend, thus allowing plenty of time for animating and of course rendering which will consume a large chunk of the remaining time left..
12-15-2008, 05:45 PM
I wasn't sure about the Slepnir design but its looking quite good now. Hard enough doing an 8 legged horse let alone a mechanical one.
12-15-2008, 10:38 PM
thanks Wyatt, i think the design is working out OK, but its been a real bugger to build ..
glad its not me animating it .... :D
12-15-2008, 10:39 PM
some progress on Odin by Airflow ..
12-15-2008, 10:41 PM
Early modelling work by Boone on Fenris
12-16-2008, 12:38 PM
Oh, and forgot to show a quick animation test that I slapped together the other morning...
12-16-2008, 10:03 PM
And whats this? Could it be an update for Fenris?
12-16-2008, 10:58 PM
another Odin update from Airflow to combat the growing menace posed by Fenris ...
12-17-2008, 07:24 AM
Odin comes great... maybe too much clean for the moment... but already very well made...
12-17-2008, 07:11 PM
thanks Lemog ..
he'll be a lot dirtier after he's been eaten by the wolf ..:bounce:
here's a small test of his face rig .
12-17-2008, 08:39 PM
he'll be a lot dirtier after he's been eaten by the wolf
Of course :wise:
...good test of face animation... that seem very smooth
12-18-2008, 10:59 AM
update on Slepnir. still some modelling to do, and a few a small issues to deal with, and its not fully rigged yet, but should have completed the modelling part on schedule.progress on Fenris is progressing well, and again should be completed on time.
All in all we are pretty much on target at the moment. The aim is to ensure plenty of time for rendering/post work so we can submit a couple of days before the deadline (which is in 47 days, 13 hrs, 7 mins and 5 secs according to the image uploader ..:) )
12-18-2008, 11:40 PM
some wolf like updates from boone
12-21-2008, 03:56 PM
Slepnir almost ready to head to the rigging shop.
a few small delays at the moment mainly due to most of us having real lives, but overall progress is good ..
12-21-2008, 05:38 PM
looking good chaps best of luck to whoever has to animate this, especially an eight legged horse walk cycle:bowdown:
12-22-2008, 05:12 AM
 A+ on the Slepnir model. Can't wait to see how it animates.
12-22-2008, 12:01 PM
thanks guys .. well the models now been handed over to airflow for rigging.
should be a Fenris update from Boone later today as well as some work im finishing off on the spear, and some matte paintings from airflow for the environment ..
all go just now, probably slow down for a couple of days over Christmas, then ramp back up going into January ...
... is that another year gone ???
12-22-2008, 12:57 PM
more gears please!
12-23-2008, 12:18 PM
fenris' head by Airflow
12-23-2008, 12:55 PM
Maximum pawnage, Mr A.
12-24-2008, 07:03 AM
There's alot of elements to keep up with here so let me just say... they all look excellent! Keep up the good work guys and I'll be watching this thread like a hawk
12-24-2008, 07:59 AM
Head very well designed, me like much
12-24-2008, 01:22 PM
yeah, the head is really cool. I've go a complete wolf mocked up just now, i'll post it up shortly ..
Also Odin's spear, and a couple of other things
(cant keep up with all the wip's being thrown at me ...:bounce: )
thank you all for your comments, really appreciate them ...
12-24-2008, 09:10 PM
update on Fenris. the head is obviously needing scaled up but this is the basic setup for now ..
12-24-2008, 09:16 PM
some environment art from Airflow.
this will be the last update 'till after Christmas so thank you to all who have commented so far ..
and Merry Christmas to all at CGTalk...
12-26-2008, 10:13 AM
The environment is very promising...
and about Fenris... of course the head must be bigger... much
12-27-2008, 11:57 PM
updates! updates! updates!
12-28-2008, 12:31 AM
12-28-2008, 01:16 PM
updates ?? .. cant a guy get a break at Christmas ? :) ...... update on Fenris and his growing head ...
12-28-2008, 04:55 PM
now thats more like a big bad wolf, hahahaha, nice fenrir man, give me some inspiration for my fenrir, i'll post it if my fenrir done, hehehehe
12-28-2008, 07:39 PM
Cheers, Niall, as Fenris has been perhaps the hardest modelling task I have ever been given. I would like to thank Airflow and Simjoy for being there during the long hours to guide me when I've hit a brick wall. Oh, and for modelling the head as well.:arteest:
I would like to take this oppertunity to invite only the bravest of you all to join us for the last month of work on the Ragnarok project. The work that will be left is animation and rendering...
But understand that I am not asking for just anybody. We need those who are not just there as "moral support", but have the time and dedication to knuckle down. I myself am turning away overtime at my day job to ensure this project gets done.
If you are for real, and have 3dsMax 2009, and have the time to work on this project, then please sign up right here on this thread. Skills in UVing, rigging, animation and rendering are desired, but a willingness to learn and determination to see a project through to completion are also highly prized.
12-30-2008, 11:52 AM
Ok, a few modelling changes to facilitate animation, but the front end has now been successfully rigged by Airflow. Just the rear end to do now.
12-30-2008, 11:55 AM
Another view. Fenris should be a lot simpler to rig given his different construction. Hopefully we will all be back on this full time very shortly ..
12-30-2008, 04:53 PM
looking very impressive guys you should take this up as a hobby:)
don't know if its of any use to you but the latest issue of 3dworld mag has got some centroid horse mocap data on the cover disk in fbx format.
keep up the great work:beer:
12-30-2008, 07:20 PM
LOL, well Craig you shall be seeing more of my "hobby" in 2009, right after this project ends in febuary.
12-30-2008, 09:58 PM
LOL, well Craig you shall be seeing more of my "hobby" in 2009, i thought you were trying to keep that quiet mate ...
in the closet, so to speak ..:D
12-30-2008, 10:01 PM
He walks ..... well he has the ability too, still got make him do it ... you can lead a horse to water but ...
12-30-2008, 10:57 PM
LOL, lets just say I've got a thing for Cyborg horses, Simon.;)
12-31-2008, 12:54 AM

12-31-2008, 08:19 PM
is that it ?
you make it sound so easy ....;)
01-03-2009, 12:32 PM
Sadly, Boone has, due to personal reasons, decided to leave this project. Unfortunately this leaves Airflow and I little alternative but to terminate this challenge entry.
The remaining time is nowhere near enough for the two of us to complete this project to the standard we desire (or require) in the free time we have available.
We considered transferring our entry to the still image category, but the requirements are such that we would be ineligible, i.e. no team entries. Since all our assets were created by several individuals, we are unable to do this.
WE would like to thank everyone for their support in helping us get this far, and wish continued good luck to all those still competing. We will still be around to support other entries ..
Thank you all once again ..
Simjoy, airflow, boone
01-03-2009, 01:10 PM
Sad to hear Simon...
just wait to see the still image now... that could be great anyway...
I just hope you feel okay... and I wish you an happy new year... for all the team
01-03-2009, 01:46 PM
To be honest, i don't know if i can make it either, but hey, it wouldn't be the first time the challenge got extended. It used to be enough for a 3d still image, but damn, for animated short it's way too little. Just take a look at all entries and see how far they are from completion. There are a few freaks that got quit far, but it there are not too many, it's a big chance we'll see an extension.
And if it doesn't come, well it should be a great portfolio piece with little effort afterwards. Otherwise all work is gone.
So my advice: Just keep working :bounce:
I'm gonna do the same thing as long as i don't run into some major software probs again. I had one last week but i got over it.
01-03-2009, 03:30 PM
I know. Its how we feel. But I cant see how were going to get things rendered much less animated. every bodys busy. Ive put off one job for the challenge and Im starting a new one today.
So there just isnt enough time to get it how we want. We may continue just to have an end image.
some updates on fenris btw.
01-03-2009, 11:34 PM
Well, should you guys decide to just go for a still image and just update it here whenever you have the time... I would love to continue watching! Even if its not eligible for either challenge prize, it still helps support the challenge and keep others going :)
Anyways I give you all 5 stars for the work you got done. It seemed like a major milestone that boone to crossed so... my props to him. Sim and Airflow... my hats off to you!
I agree with Nico (Nothingness) - don't give up, keep going! You have a great idea on your hands, and you have already created lot's of assets - use them as good as you can, if not for the prizes then for your own showreels.
Our team have experienced the same crisis: one of our team members have decided to stop. It is hard to get over frustration at first, but, hey, how often we get to do our own things at work, it's always somebody elses idea and "baby" we are putting our efforts into. And here is a good chanse to put our hards into our own idea!
You have done a great work so far, and, yes, we have seen deadlines moved before, who knows, may be you will still be able to finish it :)
01-08-2009, 02:02 PM
Great models! Keep on posting!
We have also a big problem that our 3d artists are very busy at work so what we are going to do is to call some friends to help!! We have a lot of models to finish and each person will help at least with one. The main goal is to have a 30 sec movie to show so will will reduce some details to be able to complete this challenge.
01-11-2009, 04:09 PM
Thanks for your support guys. We discussed things and all agreed that I should take the assets I built and make a still entry, which is what I did. I dont think it would have been possible for us to have done much more on the video entry as we did not have ther resources to get the renders out, maybey 3 machines between me and simjoy, and not being able to put the time in, though I spent most of my spare time on this, as did the others.
Anyway, Ive entered the Still competition. I think I got about a day left to get things together, Im posting a update so pop over and say hello. Thanks
