I really don't understand how people get to paint so well with Painter. I can't get the colors to blend well togheter without making it look like another one of those digital paintings with blurry shading. I bet I'm gonna have to resort to oil painting if this keeps up (which means buying more material out of dissatisfaction with previous ones again), because I have had enough problems with simply using the tablet without getting wiggly lines already.

Any tips to make this look more realistic? Nevermind the hair for now, I am focussing on the face. But I seriously have trouble understanding what I am doing wrong. Thanks, and I know the compression is really bad on this one.

I'm not familiar with Painter's tools yet, but I think these same principles of painting with Photoshop will apply.

1. Paint large. High resolutions of 150 - 300dpi
2. Start with large brushes to block in colors
3. Refine with smaller brushes

I also work my opacity/transperancy settings as I get closer to detail. The looser I paint, the more transperant. Details are done 90 - 100% opacity.

Everyone paints differently though ... so I'm sure you'll get several other useful tips from others here.

I think that you must play with the resat, and bleed controls, in the
brush controls palette. If you set the bleed some value, and the resat to
zero, the brush just blending the colors together.

Lets play!
