Hi All,

I am working on a project in which i am rendering still images of mechanical products. But i cannot seem to get the lighting how i want it. The results i am aiming for you can see from the link below. I also know the materials play a part but if someone could point me in the right lighting direction, e.g what lights should i use? Should i build a studio for the model, instead of just rendering in the normal environment? What render settings should i use? i am using Mental Ray btw.

HTC ? Touch Phone, PDA Phone, Smartphone, Mobile Computer: Products ? HTC Touch Pro: Device Tour (http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchpro/product-tour.html)

Please any help would be appreciated.

As your object is pretty dark, you light it with specular energy but not diffuse, i.e you use white reflective planes mainly. You don't need any studio to build, studios are idealised environments to get full control of lighting, which you have in 3d by default. I think you should study studio lighting and cg lighting and shaders, it's not very easy to explain how to do it in a couple of phrases.
Check this thread, maybe you will find it interesting as it has almost the same case as yours. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=5416305#post5416305
