View Full Version : A style question
Blekdar 11-28-2008, 07:11 AM Hey, I was gonna start planning my environment demo reel, and I had a question regarding style/technique. I was a thinking of doing a cartoony environment similar to the sam and max games by Telltale. Would this be a good show of modeling/texturing or would it just look lazy and unpolished? I'm just curious if it would catch a developers eye or if they would glance over it.
Heres some examples

in my experiance, Demo reels should be above all else, a testament to what you CAN do. Doing a styalized and optimized piece like sam and max is fine, but put it at the end, and be sure to give PLENTLY of texture samples and sizes as well as budgets to give people an idea of what they are looking at first.
Placing an art target of "portable" gameplay limitations can prepare people that what they are looking at is the best you can do at optimizing the work, not the best you can do period.
Just be sure to pad your reel with highly refined peices of work before you show limited budget work. Because in the end, you want your reel to look as good as you can get, and highly optimized pieces of work simply don't look good compared to polished and refined next gen pieces.

I can tell you for a fact I would be very interested in seeing a reel with some really well done cartoon environments! We don't see enough of this type of stuff these days in my opinion, mostly because there's just a bigger marketplace for realism right now.
It wouldn't look sloppy and unfinished if you do it well, the sam and max stuff looks great to me and follows the look of the original game really well (which still has some of the best graphics I've ever seen in a game). I'd like to see something similar but maybe with a bit more love put into the textures so you're showing off your texturing skills as well. Also you could concentrate on lighting the scene nicely.
Good luck - keep us posted.

Well frankly thats all a relief to hear. Ok, I think I can do that. Thanks alot for the advice you guys, I'll be sure to put alot of love into the cartoony environment and do a more realism one as well so I can show a good variety in my skills.
