i am thinking about upgrading my machine but not sure if i need to spend a little or a lot.

currently learning 3dsmax so would like to know if the current set up is adequate:

-------------------------------------------------------

Core 2 duo E6600 2.40ghz 1066fsb lga775 4mb cache

2gb of geil ultra ddr2 pc6400 2 x 1 gb 800mhz

saphire radeon x1600 pro 256mb

Asus p5b deluxe 965 socket 775 core 2 duo/core 2 extreme pci-e x16 atx

---------------------------------------------------------

i read in the motherboard manual that the mobo can support up to 8gb of ram but something tells me there would be a catch since the thought of 8gb sounds good to me!

im thinking the graphics card might need swapping for something more robust also.

A lot of people are using 8gb+ nowadays but you'll need a 64bit OS and 64bit version of your application to access it, otherwise 3gb is the maximum that you'll be able to use.

For any 3D package, 2GB just isn't enough. Go for at least 4GB and go for the 8GB if it works out with the budget. Cheers!

Faster and more RAM is required for these 3D softwares to run smoothly. Like biliousfrog said, you need 64bit OS to get more that 4GB of RAM. As for your graphics card, I'd recommend to get a Nvidia card with high clock speed.

The board you specify uses DDR2 @ 800Mhz, supports dual channel. Just get either Corsair or Kingston.. whatever your choice.

@johnart, one thing confuses me, on the link to my motherboard they are boasting about kingston 1066mhz ram made specially for the p5b? :surprised how is that possible?
