View Full Version : Anatomy Thread of Aethalin
aethalin 11-27-2008, 06:43 PM Hiya,
I have been wanting to do this for a while, but I have been hesitant, since I feel that I am behind, from where I would like to be. This will be my thread focusing on the figure in particular through gesture and anatomy studies. I wlil also post various works that I have dealing with the figure. I hope to gain a great deal more skill, and I could use some critics :) I love the figure, so I am hoping that I can learn a lot more to fully develop my portfolio.
I have always been a lurker, as I am rather socially inept, but I will try to keep up with this thread and give critiques covering the other fabulous work here. Thank you for even taking a look. These pictures will be ranging from studies, getures, speed paints, and line. MAny of the Bridgeman and Hobarth studies are newer.
Some of the pieces are new, and some are a bit older. Some are from my sketchbook thread, but I feel that they have more of a place here.

Hiya,
Here are a couple gestural sketches that I have done at a sketch and mingle gathering. I of course sketches but didn't mingle to much :). The time varies on the sketches, so some are a minute or two, while others could be up to 5 to 8 minutes.

Hiya,
Here are a couple more gestures and sketches. I am really trying to learn the form better. In some cases, I feel that I am progressing, but in others I feel that I am not. I guess just more and more practice is needed :). Granted, I have not been this inspired to do art for years.

Another speed painting from the Daily speed painting thread. I spent about a hour to a hour and a half on it. I lost the dramatic perspective in the pice, so I amy go back and rework it. It was a nice learning experience though.

Hiya,
NR43, thank you very much for the criticism. I really appreciate it. I will hopefully not slack on this one. *crosses fingers*
Kanga, thank you, and I really like that pose as well. I tried to finalize it once, but I just could capture it like the first gesture. :( It was fun though.
Agigaherger, thank you. I love yo draw from Bridgeman, if I can't get inspired. I know that I can always sketch from his work. :)
Here are a few more speed paintings from the daily speed painting thread.
A head bust of Chateaubriand that I spent a bit longer, than I meant. I think about 45 minutes to an hour. I am finding that I really enjoy painting busts. :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/casthead2.jpg
Another speed painting that I spent about 50 minutes to an hour on. It was a fun piece, and I feel that I learned a lot doing it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/soldierspeed.jpg
This is a sketch of my friends precocious and pugnacious little ones. I spent abotu 20 to 25 minutes on it. I am in the process of painting it next.

Hiya,
Here a few more for today, as I still need to scan some of my sketches into the computer. *coughs* Here are a couple more sketches and speed paintings.
This is a sketch from the speed painting thread, followed by the painting. I spent about 25 minutes on the sketch, since the first couple gestures did not capture the pose well enough for me. The painting, all together, I worked on it for about an hour and a half.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/friendsketch1-1.jpg
A speed painting of a friend that I haven't gotten to talk to in a while. I spent about 2 hours on it, and I am wanting to finalize it more, but I have not had the chance.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/magstest2.jpg
Here a couple gesture sketches from my sketch book. I think that I spent about 3 to 5 minutes a piece on them. They are from some of my older work.

First a speed painting from the daily speed painting thread.

Another piece from the daily speed painting thread, a head cast. It was a fun exercise. I tried to keep the piece consistent colour wise with the reference.

Another piece from the daily speed painting thread, a work from Caravaggio, who i love. I spent about a 55 minutes or so on this one.

Hiya,
Thank you, itayg :). Yeah those books are really nice. When ever I open my Bridgeman, Hobarth, or Loomis books, I want to sketch. You should really check some them out. I love the way that Bridgeman portrays the figure, but Loomis is so inspiring. When ever I get down on my work, once I read some of his excerpts I feel better, and I want to sketch more. There are a few free Loomis books online, since his books can be hard to find. Hobarth is pretty easy to find, and he has quite a few good books in various areas. I would suggest looking at them all. Thank you again for your comments. :)
Thank you, dhruvsm :) I am having fun with them, and I am really trying to hit my figures a bit more. I would like to able to do 50 figures a week, since I think that I need it. Thank you for the welcome, and I hope to continue this thread and seeing other individuals great work :).
Okay here are a couple more for today, they span the old and the new.
The first is a speed painting from the daily speed painting thread. I spent longer than I meant on it, and it is pretty rough. I think well over a hour.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/maletatto1.jpg
The next is a work in progress of my nephew's son in the Arizona sun. Heh.. umm.. *coughs* Puns aside, I spent about 3 and a half hours on it so far. I had to rework some of the anatomy, since my initial sketch had him looking older than he is. I still need to differentiate some of the values and chroma. I think that I need to up the contrast a bit as well. It has been a neat learning experience so far. I am hoping to finish it sometime soon.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/chase2.jpg
Here is some quick gestural sketches that I did a while ago. I still like them today, but they do need work.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/conceptual%20art%20and%20sketches/nudes/femalegestures8.jpg
The two gestures are 3 to 5 minutes a piece, where the more finalized sketch is about 8 to 10 minutes. I have been in the mood to do more gestures, so I hope that i keep that up.

Hiya,
I am have not been keeping up with this, as much as I wanted. Nor have I been able to post on other's sketchbooks either. I feel bad about that one. I haven't been pushing on my gestures as of late either, but I am hoping to really dig into it this week. I am still caught up trying to create a decent portfolio for conceptual art and modeling, and I think everyone understands the stress with that and the ponderings, if you are good enough. Well enough of the babbling, here are a couple pieces that I have worked on as of late.
First a speed painting from Van Dyke. I had a lot of fun with this one, and I tried to not get lost in the details and speed up my workflow a bit. I think about 50 minutes to a hour all together
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/Vandyke1.jpg
Another speed painting that I rather enjoyed. I love arctic scenes for some reason. I have used the proverbial bitter and frozen winter with the tumultuous snow storms and eerie quiet for many of my pen and paper games that I have ran. I used a sniper idea for this one, wearing his arctic ghuille suit. I think that I spent about a hour at most on it. I am thinking of trying something else with the scene as well
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/winterland1.jpg
Yet another speed paint and the gesture of the speed paint. I spent a great deal longer on the final than I meant. With my little nephew talking to me about games and falling into the details, I spent about 2 hours on this one. The initial gesture took me 3 mintues. I usually do a couple gestures, before I find the one that i want, but i liked the initial one so much that I carried on with it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/gladiatorwomangesture.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/gladiatorwoman1.jpg
Another speed paint, but this one of a bust. I went at this one a bit differently than others. Generally, I sketch out a line drawing, before i even take it to painting, but on this one, I did no line drawing at all. I went right into blocking in the silouette then pounding away at the shapes and forms. It came out so much faster using this method. it even felt mroe intuitive to me. I may try to do it more often, since I can noodle away at a line drawing for quite a while. I spent at most 40 minutes on this one.

Hiya,
Thank you very much, Intervain :) I really like that one as well. I am wanting to try some more of his studies.
Here is a colour idea for a texture map that I will be applying a model, once I finish the high poly. I may try a couple other versions. This one seems a bit flat to me, but it at least gives me a idea. I wants a almost arctic wolf for this one, but I am thinking other variations as well. It was fun toying with various brushes alone or in combination for fur simualation. I think that I will play with it even further.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/wolfcreaturecolouridea1.jpg
Okay, here is the actual high poly sculpt so far. I am still in the finer detail stage, and this si within MUdbox. I heard that Z-brush was more complex, but I found Mudbox's UI to be more intuitive. I really want to work more in Z-brush though, since it is what is mostly used in the various industries. It is sitting at about 2.5 million polys at the moment, but I am betting that it will be double that, once i am finished. I have learned a lot wkring through this piece, and I think that my next one will be far faster. I am kind of getting addicted to the sculpting, since I enjoy sculpting in clay or super sculpy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/3d%20work/work%20in%20progress/wolfcreaturesculptnew18.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/3d%20work/work%20in%20progress/wolfcreaturesculptnew17.jpg
Another speed painting, and this one of a cute furry one. I really enjoyed this piece, and I tried to up my workflow toying aroudn with various brushes and setting to simulate fur quicker. It was a nice learning experience. I spent about 40 minutes on this one at most.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/gopher1.jpg
Another bust, this one of St. Peter, I am not completely happy with this one, but it was a fun exercise, and I am finding that I enjoy painting busts. I may have to do quite a few more. I spent about 50 minutes to a hour on this one.

Hiya,
Well another day and a few more pictures to show. I really need to pound out some work, as I still have a lot to learn, relearn, and complete. It is a taxing but seemingly educational time, as I am learning so much now, and I have been more inspired to create.
Well enough of my normal babbling, here are a few of the pieces that I have done as of late.
Starting off with a couple sketches of animals, which i love.
Black coloured pencil in my sketchbook
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/wolfon.jpg
Black coloured pencil on newsprint, for the quick 5 minute sketches of frogs.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/froggies1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/froggies2.jpg
A quick sketch of ravens on a tree limb, pencil in my sketchbook.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/Ravens1.jpg
A quick 20 minute sketch of my Champion, from LotR online. it is using the pencil brush in PS, and he will eventually become a 3d model, once I flesh him our further.

Hey. I've always been amazed and motivated by both your work and attitude. But I guess it must be that I myself am really sluggish.

Hiya,
Thank you very much for thinking so, donom. :) I really like the ravens as well. It sometimes makes me laugh looking at it, as they are talking like the Good Feathers from the Animaniacs. About speed, I really do need to be faster, but you are pretty quick with your sketches as well. I hope to see more work from your thread so keep it up. :) I guess that I don't feel, as though I am doing enough recently.
Here a few more pieces...
the first is a rather silly one from the Daily speed paint. It is what Mrs. Claus. I had it, as what it when Mrs. Claus went to visit family. She started to work out and wanting to enhance her loveliness as a gift to herself and a surprise for her husband. Imagine his surprise, when he seen his 'gift'. It is a bit puerile, but it was the first idea to come to me. I spent about a hour or so on it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/santaswife1.jpg
The next is another from the speed paint thread. Another bust which I am really enjoying. I am not as happy with this one, and I spent about 40 to 45 minutes on it. I tried to paint with shapes instead of starting with a line drawing, per my usual. It was a nice learning experience though.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/malebust1.jpg
Another speed painting form the thread, which I am really not happy with, but I dont' want to work into it further. I learned a lot from it, even if it was what not to do in some cases. I like the background well enough, but I really think that I botched the figure. It seems alien to me, but I can't tell what it is, other than the head looking kind of creepy. I spent about a hour and a hal on it, and it might have been more, as I being bombarded with questions from my little nephew.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/modelinsand1.jpg
I finally started toying a bit more with Z-brush, and some things I like more than Mudbox, but I still find Mudbox a bit easier to work with. I still liked the feel of the sculpting in Z-brush more. Perhaps, I just need to acclimate myself to UI more. I spent about 50 minutes on this head. I started from a polyshere. There was no reference used for it, but I think that I may sculpt a few more this weekend.

Hiya,
anandpg, thank you very much and Happy New Year to you as well. :)
ForzaInter, thank you for your kind words. :) I am still learning how to be faster in that, and I still have so much to learn. :)
Intervain, thank you :) I hope to play with it a lot more as well. I am starting to get the hang of the interface, and I am liking some of the tools in it.
Okay I have not been able to do as much as I would have liked digitally, but my sketchbook has been getting filled as are pieces of paper laying about. *whistles innocently* Hmm that and a lot of bread is getting baked, but we can't just make art without making food, right?
Here is a piece from the daily speed paint. it is repaint of BELLINI, Giovanni's work. I spent about 45 minutes on it, and I tried to keep it as consistent as I could, but I wanted to up my speed. I painted it with out a line drawing again, as I am still trying to move past that phase a bit. I know that I will always need to use line drawings, but I think, sometimes I become lost in it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/speedrepaint1.jpg
A silly speed painting from the speed painting thread. I thought that the subject matter was rather neat and amusing. I spent about 25 minutes on it, and I tried to keep a loose feel with it. I had a lot of fun doing this piece.

Hiya,
Thank you very much, Esmeralda. I am really enjoying the study of his pices. :) I always have had a soft spot for Bridgeman since college. His sketches always makes me want to draw, and when I am down and can't focus, his work generally assists me in overcoming it.
I have not done enough as of late, since I am being my normal anxious and effusive self. With family members needing me to consistently fix their computers or teaching them various ways of using their computers. I have not been able to devote all the time that I needed. I have also had a gap with creativity, so I have been immersing myself within other's works again and running every day. You would nto believe how much going for a long run assists in your creativity. I deduce that it is because of the blood getting to your brain, but what ever the case. it helps. It might be, because Arizona is gorgeous in it's own way. I am going to have to post my gestures and such soon, since I am enjoying the critiques. It is helping me so much as a artist, and I know that I still have a long way to go, if I want to get back into the field. Here are a few speed paintings that I have done as of late.
This was for the daily speed painting thread, and we had to redesign a scene of a blacksmith. I really enjoyed this piece, and I am relatively happy with the ending. I may eventually go in and make it a finished illustration, but that wil have to wait until my portfolio is finished. I spent about 50 minutes on this one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/blacksmith1.jpg
Another bust study that I am finding that I enjoy so very much. I spent about 45 to 50 minutes on this one, and I am used the technique that I have been testing as of late. I didn't use a line drawing, but I went right in to defined the shapes and values.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/malebust2.jpg
The next I spent far to long on, and I lost track of time in the process. I started to render the face, and I think that my OCD kicked in, since I would not stop until I was relatively happy with it. *whistles innocently* I had to fix the anatomy in a few places as well. I really liked the pose, so the clothing that I designed. I tried not to obscure the form to much. I made more of a sultry coaktail dress. i am not completely content with the piece, but I learned a lot in doing it. I know next time to define the clothing and folds further to make it mroe 3 dimensional. I spent nearl or maybe even over 2 hours on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/modelnewfashion2.jpg
The next is a repaint from Sarto's Portrait of a Young man. I loved doing this one. I think it was due to the intricacy of the clothing folds and the over all mood. I spent about a hour and a half on it. I am thinking of bringing it to a more finalized piece, once I have more time, as I am not completely happy with it, but I am kind of glad how it turned out.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/Sartorepaint1.jpg
I really need to practice and show more, and thank you to all who look and critique. :) I know that I need to do that more as well.

HEY Ed..:)
Really enjoying your thread and studies..Lots of variety in your explorations..
I do think that the Sarto painting deserves more refining, you captured a great feeling in it.:applause: ..Always the case when the piece that your working on is to your likeing and inspires you to capture the feeling that attracted you to it in the first place..:)
Anyway...Keep up the great work, and progress..
