Frontpage worthy - beautiful work steven and the crew! Such attention to detail!
Never heard of you fellas before - definitely one to add to the list when sending out my reel/cv :P

If there's one gripe, its that the ambient sfx seem lacking and this is crying out for a music track.

Other than that 5/5. Totally way awesome. My socks have been rocked off. I would love to see some more material on how you did all the particle effects :)

Nice one guys.
Some crazy Fumefx/Afterburn going on in there

Congrats!

Edit: No Fumefx???

No FumeFX on this one. Just AfterBurn throughout. We used FumeFX on Juiced2, but this time for speed and simplicity Max Particles and AfterBurn was the prefered choice.

I'll see if I can get our T.D. to post some info on the particles if he's not too busy:)

All of us were wow'd by this when we got shown it in the office. A few seconds of silence then, "again, again!" Loved it then and I love it now.

I was on the team @ THQ creating the original low-poly planes, and the Realtime versions just blew them away! Realtime were constantly communicating and providing updates along the way. Need a game intro? You need RealtimeUK

What program(s) did you use in this production, particularly to create the environments? Was Vue used at all?
For all those who have asked:)

The forest scene with the plane that looks like an A-10 was done with a mixture of VUE, camera mapping and matte's.

None of the other environments were done with VUE, they were all modelled in 3dsmax and either texture mapped traditionally or camera mapped using matte paintings.

We had an issue at the time getting a velocity pass out of VUE, so for the forest environments they were rendered out as flat footage from within VUE, with no motion blur. They were then placed in the backgorund of max with a trasparent version of the exported mesh from VUE over the top. This then enabled us to use the velocity pixel data of the transparent geometry to image blur the render behind. It worked pretty well, and made sure the plane and background had the same blur.

Everything else that was modelled was done in 3dsmax.
UV's were done in UVlayout (great bit of software).
Texturing in Photoshop.
Particles in AfterBurn.
Rendering in Vray.
Post work in After Effects.
Edit in Premiere.

Hope thats enopugh detail:)

Thanks for all of your comments.

WOW, thanks folks for all the positive comments, means a lot to the team here :)
It was our fav cinematic to work on so far, glad it shows through.

In agreement about the soundtrack, would love to have some kick-ass music on there, but our job was just sorting the sound FX.

I think the great thing with this one was it engaged on so many levels - the pre-vis was inspiring, both from the client and our own, the modellers were in their element with the planes and loved working on the backgrounds, the animators got to create some cool moves, and there's a nuke explosion thrown in for good measure! What more could we ask for...

We're hoping to re-design our website soon, make it more image/video rich. We do have problems with our game cinematics generally being under wraps until the developer/publisher is ready to go public - we've still got some which we're just dying to show, hopefully we can post more soon...

Cheers!

Wow, stunning work! The aircraft manoeuvres look and feel so real for agressive low-level stuff! None of that naff Independence Day F18 Grand Canyon stuff here :)

Just two crits that are small but important to me ;)

The A10 like aircraft that strafes the camp with gatling guns, it flies through an explosion cloud with no cool swirls of the smoke :(

The big missile that explodes after being shot down, is it nuclear? Doesn't it stay disarmed until safely on it's way to the target? ;)

Well, the video has worked, as I go off to see what the game is all about :D

hey, that is some really good work there, very well done!

the whole cinematic is on such a high level of quality. Its great to see what real good artists can do in so little time. I love the lighting, the shading is very nice as well even though ist is very shiny on some planes. The explosions are awesome, must have been a lot of fun blowing all that stuff up. As said before, the animation really looks alive, great!

There is just one thing that I was wondering about. The jetstream of some of the jets looks a bit strange on some planes, especially the F-14 and F-15 lookalikes. The jetstream doesnt look like hot gas streaming out of the engine. It looks more like a big shape particle of some kind and doen't really meet the high level of quality of the rest of the cinematic.

I'd really like to know the reasons why you chose to do them that way.

I hope this isn't offensive, I'm just curious.

I have some specific questions I hope you can answer them.

First of all, how you set up the pipeline between MAX and VUE? The camera is defined in MAX or in VUE and how you merge between the apps? Did you relied on CameraMAP or similar technique?... if not how you rendered? rendercows? how stable was your render? got flicker, even ILM sayed they couldnt get rid of it... How about your rendering times????

Tnx in advance...

Hi shoey,

beautiful work - I have added your video to my collection of "must look at" when creating animated sequences.

I think you would have loved the new Vue 7 xStream - which works seamlessly with 3DS max. You can now have all that vegetation right inside of Max.

Mafx

Vue 7 xStream and VRAY whaaaaat, I see no reference to that on the e-on site anywhere and I thought they would flog that to death.

Thank you all for all of your very kind replies. Everyone in the studio here is made up that so many people like it after such a long wait to show it:applause:

If you can all hang on a little bit longer for some answers, we are going to put together a more in depth making-of that should cover most of the questions raised.

Did you guys work on the Muse "Sing for Absolution" video? The space ship looks almost identical... lolNo we didn't do that:)

Hey Phil, dear friend, you guys over there in Realtime did a great job, ... cheers! Thanks very much Ila. I'm very glad you like it. You're now in Canada? you sure move around alot:D

How about your rendering times????The camera was setup in Max, then the animation was baked onto it and taken into VUE. It was rendered with rendercow on our farm. The renders were never stable, there was always a slight shimmer. It just got covered over with the blurs and effects in max. The rendertimes were really quite long, don't remember exactly, fortunately it was only for a couple of shots.

Amazing! Terrific job guys! Do you use Fume FX?Not on this job. It's all AfterBurn.

I think you would have loved the new Vue 7 xStream - which works seamlessly with 3DS max. You can now have all that vegetation right inside of Max - and best of ALL - VRAY is now supported as well as a render engine - Before it was only Mental Ray.Ahhhh, that would've been great yes. We didn't have that option at the time though.

Very cool. How did you do the terrain? For me it looks like sculptet in for example zBrush and than used an optmize-modifer :) Is that right?Actually no zbrush at all on this job. It was all done with low poly block-out mesh and then a big stack of meshsmooths, noises, and opimizes.

Again, we'll try to put a more detailed set of answers together in a making of. Bear with us:wip:

Hey guys, congratz on the awesome work. I am awe struck by the level of detail you guys produced in such a short amount of time. How did you guys render all this stuff? Did you have a inhuose farm large enough to support all this or did you guys farm it out to a third party?

All in-house, we've got 50 dedicated dual Xeon 1U render nodes, running up to 8 cores per machine. Plus all the artist workstations on evenings & weekends... runs quite nicely and can generally cope with a few projects at the same time - just needs a whopping air con unit to keep it sweet...

Hi there..!
Really enjoyed watching this movie!

I am really looking forward to see your making of. What I wonder is how you get such big environments to render. The amount of detail in the city, amount of trees and so on.

The heat distortion is done in Post production or was it rendered from max?

A shot breakdown would be very cool..
Keep on posting the good work!

You guys certainly did and excellent job (much as you did with your work on Juiced2), I remember this blowing us away when we watched it for the first time in the office with the volume cranked up.

seriously very very very good!

Iv always had a keen eye on Realtime, back in the day they where one of the best CG illustation studios in the UK. Now though I think its pretty clear they are producing work that is truly on a different level.

Everyone loved seeing Realtime's stuff when it came in, even the first 'clay' renders of the vid looked awesome. Can't believe the amount that was done in such a short period of time.

The video looks incredible and is a memory of a great game that will never be!!

Aaaah finally it's public! So awesome! Best 3D aircraft animation and best CG nuke I've ever seen. I absolutely love this video and am most impressed by the short production time compared to the small team size!

I saw this over a year ago when I visited RTUK and have been waiting ever since to see it again. Now I can watch it over and over and over... :D

Congrats on a superbly stunning job RTUK!!!

Couldn't you invent aircrafts instead of those disgusting Harrier and A-10 jobs ..? Well i guess at least Tupolev Bear doesn't seem to be destroyed...

At 50 seconds in there is a really nice shot of the blue fighter through a valley and taking out a bridge. I would have thought that would have been done in Vue but After Burn does not render in Mental Ray (I assume that is the bridge effect).

Can you do a quick breakdown of that particular shot, the terrain is great, the blur and camera work all mix really well - would just like a 'behind the scenes on that one'

Many thanks

Hey guys!

Good work on your cinematics!

Here in the studio where I work some artists looked at your cinematic and posted some intestesting questions that I did not think of until they mentioned it. Now I am curious as well.

Why are airplanes so shiny? There is no dirt maps.
and lastly, why you are mixing airplanes from very different periods of time?

Cero,

You only need to look at the images of the planes at the begining of this post to see that the planes are pretty dirty, and not that shiny.

The workstations are Precisions, we are on to 690's now.
The render nodes are Poweredge 1U servers.

Just a question for anyone who may be able to answer it. The environments in this are awesome and going by this pic;
http://www.hrauk.com/cgtalk/RTUK_SB_breakdown03.jpg

(the middle frame)

They are obviously modelled. Is this a matter of hand crafting the polys to form canyons and cliff faces or are their scripts somewhere that help you get a start with this sort of thing and then just tweak the results.. the canyons and cliffs in this is something I would dearly love to replicate.

Thanks

S.

As a Vue user it's wonderful to see it on your work flow. I have a question - as I know Vue xStream plug in is not working with Vray (only with mental ray). So did you rendered Vue elemets separately and composited ? Or used Mental Ray renderer when the scenes which Vue involved.

Many thanks in advance for the answer...

Thanks again for everyone's feedback

We'll sort the making of stuff as soon as we can, but it's going to be after Christmas now as we're flat out on the latest cinematic... hope you can bear with us for a little longer.:wip:
We'd like to spend some decent time on this and present more wip layers, breakdown clips, render settings, etc and go through how we made the nuke amongst other things.

We've been noting down all the comments which haven't been answered so far, so hopefully we'll cover all the feedback..

Cheers!

Excellent work, makes me want to play that game. There seems to be absolutely no info whatsoever about it? Strange that the trailer is released before the game is even announced...

One thing though: I watched it in class without sound, second time just now with sound on, and must say it comes across less coherent without a music track binding stuff together and pumping up the adrenalin. I'm crossing my fingers so very very badly that you guys will pull the same mind blowing audio-video match like you did with Pendulum's Tarantula on the Pacific Rift trailer. Such well chosen music made me pretty much fall of my chair in amazement :)

Hello there,

My name is Dan and I'm not a professional (or even close) animator.
I am a professional rock/metal guitarist who does CG as a hobby so I don't do smack as a hobby.

I signed up here just so I could say WOW!

I got my first computer in '85 (it was a C=64) and I've loved computer animation and stuff most of my life. I saw a bit of this film posted over at www.3dgladiators.com (http://www.3dgladiators.com) and so I came here because I needed to know more about it and the people who made it.

I just wanted to say I am so blown away by this, floored by this and amazed by this that it's made me really want to 'up my game'.

I am self taught and no where near the level of you professionals but as a fan of computers, animation and scifi - I had to sign up just to say...

...FREAKIN' WOW!

I'm floored by your animation and talent.

I think I pee'd my pants watching this!

One question - is this the same THQ that did 'Titan Quest'?

Can I ask a question about the movements of the planes. Do you use a dummy linked to the aircraft mesh and then to a spline and animate the various movements that way or do you just keyframe the animation of the aircraft and tweak the trajectories and the like from there.

I am never really sure how these sorts of sequences hang together. Even when I see shots from Ep 3 for example when the camera tracks the two jedi fighters and follows them through various actions, is it all spline controlled tracks or ?? just one of those things that elude me.

Any even just basic ideas from your scenes about this sort of control would be handy to read.

Thanks.
