Hey all - (I did search here and on Google about this, and found no direct answer. There'e been a thread here two years ago, and through Google I found lots of varying answers pointing in different directions, not helping me...)

The short version is: I have a number of MXF files from an Avid, that I want to import into After Effects. I have installed the avid codecs package, and that allows me to play back the files in Media Player Classic, but not in Windows Media Player or Quicktime, and After Effects still can't import the file. I'm using After Effects 7.0.1.11

I could propably convert it using a number of 3rd party tools, but from what I understand I want to keep the native data of the MXF file, because that will allow me to keep the original quality and compression. -If I convert it, I'll have to sacrifice either quality or disk space.

Any tips of MXF/AE workflow will be much appreciated. :)

Thanks,
- Jonas

when i had cs3, i was just rendering out the data lossless from premiere.

now that i have cs4, i can just open the folder from premiere, into after effects without having to render, and import over again.

options other than that i dont know, id also be interested.

As pointed out by Apollo, sans Premiere and CS4 this is still pretty much a no-go. The point where it usually breaks is how multi-track data may be stored in the files and AE by itself cannot properly convert it. Of course, if you are reasonably sure they are only single-track/ stream video files and don't miss any rendered effects, you could try to import them in AE directly, but even then CS4 might be the only version that will correctly handle stuff created with the latest versions of Avid suites. After all, MXF is merely a container format and can contain a variety of other things inside...
