I'm wondering what program you started out with and where you ended up. Are you using multiple programs or just one...

I'm curious as I'm thinking of slowely making the shift towards Maya...

I started out using Strata, Electric Image and FormZ--and now pretty much use C4d exclusively for 3d stuff.

Of course I couldnt get buy without AI, PS and AE, and have started dabbling in Motion Builder and Terragen, which are both very cool programs.

I've actually been using Poser lately since I've had a lot of work needing articulated customized particular human figures. For example, one of the 4 people I needed was a 60 year old overweight african american male with gray beard and baggy eyes (specs!) I bought the Daz Victoria 3 model and you have unlimited figures (male female, ethnicity, age) from that. Came in handy as the client kept asking for tweaks to the model "less muscular, smaller lats, rounder face" (!) and this let me do it quickly.

Other then that I have iTunes blasting most of the time.

assuming you obviously mean legally now:-

c4d - 99% of my rendering
ADT and Acad2000 - 99% of my modelling
Viz & Max - bits and bobs of modelling and rendering
Sketchup - designing
Photoshop - post production
poser & marlin studios & RPC - extra plugin help

I started out using trueSpace--for far too long. Switched to Cinema about a year and a half ago. I also use Poser 4 occasionally, Sketchup 3 for basic buildings, Motion Builder (on hold for fbx support), Darktree Textures, PS7, AE 5.5 Pro, Corel Draw 7, Painter 3D, and a few odds and ends.

many years ago (12-13) I dabbled in Strata - never did anything for real - then about 4 years ago I learn LW and then EI and then finally found that Cinema 4d was the easiest for my needs.

I used it as a 3D painter until I got BP, but it's not nearly as good. Now I just use it like a regular version of Painter for the natural media brushes, which are still better than PS'. btw, Painter 8 looks pretty sweet and there's a limited time offer.... Nah!

Thanks Adam.

I dont think my credit card can handle any more limited time offers---for a while at least. :hmm:

I started out in PiXELS3D with Painter3D - after that, anything seems easy! And Bryce, obviously, was de rigeur in those days...

Now pretty much all Cinema, although MotionBuilder looks as though it will be excellent once the Cinema bridging plug-in is done.

I started out using TopModel (on an Acorn), then started using Bryce and Poser. After a while I got fed up with the rendering artifacts produced by Bryce (and the long render times), and looked for a higher end app that I could afford.

First I tried Carrara - or whatever it is - and deeply regretted that decision since I found it virtually impossible to use. I also played with AMAPI and also found that very difficult to learn, certainly not on my wavelength. The (only) good thing about Carrara was that it gave me a competitive sidegrade to Cinema, which I had been eyeing for a long time, both because it was relatively affordable and had a fast and decent rendering engine.

I still use TopModel on occasion for modelling, and also write my own modelling s/w both as a challenge and also to tackle complex problems that I think will take less time if I write a dedicated app first ! Oh well, my only regret with all this is that there's never enough time to learn, especially when it's your hobby.

my very first 3d app exerience was with a program called Alias UpFront, followed by Strata, pixels, bryce, LW and finally C4D 8. I've played around with the PLE versions of Maya, XSI and the newer LW but it all just seems like hard work so i'll stick with C4D for the sake of my sanity ;)

I forget to mention Wings3D, which I also use every now and then.

For my 3d work I mostly use Cinema and now I just got the XL bundle and Bodypaint. So I'm pretty busy trying all the new stuff.
I also use Wings 3D alot for some kind of modeling.

Started with Sculpt 4D (Amiga), Impulses Imagine (Amiga later PC) AnimationMaster and now Cinema 4D complemented with Vue espirit 3 and Photoshop elements.

Unfortunatly Vue's camera movement sux, at least in version 3.

Have some ideas for small projects but has done nothing of interest really.

Bought Imagine for the Amiga centuries ago. Never did much with it.

In the last 2.5 years went like this:

Animation Master -> TrueSpace -> Strata -> Cinema V6,7,8
I also bought Rhino before I got Cinema. Did most of my modeling with Rhino and render in Cinema. The last several months nothing but Cinema.

Other stuff - Photoshop 6, PaintShop Pro 8, Painter 8 (and yeah it is the best version yet!), Xara, Expresion, After Effects 5, Premire 6 and Poser 3 (free version), Wings and Terragen.

More stuff than I know how to use

Started with strata, then nendo, then Mirai 1.0 and C4D 5.3 at the same time.

Moved up next school year to mirai 1.1 and XL6

Now I use Clay, Cinema 4d R8 studio, Mirai, a little learning in maya ple, and a little motionbuilder (still waiting on FBX support before I really dive in)

Now I"m going ot have to learn some more ma again thugh, got some summer workshops that unfortunately have to be taught in max. maybe what I learn will help me get into bioware.

Howdy,

I started out on an Atari ST using CAD3D with Cyber Studio and Cyber Sculpt.

Then went to a 68k Mac using Infini-D, Strata Vision and Alias Sketch.

After I got an iMac, I tried Amapi, Carrara, Strada 3D, Amorphium Pro, Electric Image, and Cinema 4D Go.

Now I use Cinema 4D 8.1 exclusively for 3D.

Adios,
Cactus Dan

Started with Bryce, then Strata, then Raydream, then Cinema but that was a long time ago, I'm onlu 19 too:D That makes me realize I haven't made much progress. I also play around with LW at school but don't own it.
