Cool!
mind the intersection of the box and the more round barrel.. the cross hatched (well pointilized) polygon especially. When texturing it is hard to make it look believeable, since those angles aren't there in real life.
otherwise.. cool. Looking forward to the explanation!
PS yes the gunbarrel, not the wooden one :p

well I wasn't late which is good :)
basicaly I noticed that everyone else was doing some sort of BIG brainless monster/ogre type boss, so I decided i'd try a bit differant and go more along the nemesis lines.
Hopefullly going to be able to create a western feel to the scene and for the boss i'm planning to make a gunslinger dressed in a long black coat.
I chose to enter this comp to try and improve my texture painting skills because as i'm sure you can see from the start of the barrel texture they're not all that yet. So any crits in this area exspecialy would be really appreciated.
Quick quetsion to anyone reading: On the top of the barrel lid, for the rim do you think it would be best to have the inner line round or pentagonal to follow the shape of the barrel?
Still kind of experimenting with the whole Idea, if this goes wrong my plan B is a slightly toony pirate :p.

That's because the topic of the competition is "Boss MONSTER." :D

haha true. Do you think this would still be aloud or am I going to have to make him half monster somehow?
I've noticed that I typod competition in the thread name but when I try and change it it jsut pops back :S what's with that?

Just keep at it... monster could also be his character not just his appearance... besides different is good in competitions... as long as you go for quality.
And on the question. I say follow the line of the barrel... since as we "the audience" have already accepted that the pentagon is "round" you can break that illusion by introducing true round things.
On the other hand if you can get rid of most of the hard edges so the pentogon will look very round than it can enhance the roundness illusion.
So it's really a matter of style. If you go for full on realism go for round, if you go for stylised go for pentagon.
Cheers!

ok thanks :) I was kind of leaning toward following the edge of the barrel but just thought it would be better to get someone elses opinion 1st :)
did a bit more work on the barrel:

and the texture:

would appreciate it if you could let me know what you think,
thanks.

didn't really have time to do anything today but I managed to sneak in 10mins to make a quick noose

I know it's not really worth posting but i'm going to feel like i've let myself down for not doing anything if i don't.

hej! good to keep busy...
I had two points on the barrel... first what are you going to do with the other half of the texture... seems to be kinda wasted now...
And 2 you'll want to check your seams because there is a distinctive black crease between the textured wood but not so at the seams...there it is a bit muddy wood colour... seems that could be improved. Its a small detail though, so no sweat. But seeing you are going for low spec and uber optimal it's something I noticed.
Looking forward to the character BTW :p

I'll probably end up trimming the texture to a 128*64 (which it already fits into already) and tehn just keeping stum about it :P.
There was no way I was going to be able to squeeze it into a 64*64 and I couldn't afford to use a whole 128*128 for it :S Would you say it's better to have a rectanguler texture sheet or 2x64*64? Because seperating the top and sides doesn't quite seem right but i've been told many times to avoid rectangular texture sheets... does anyone know of a source of information on the pros and cons of this?
The sading line down the middle was to try and make it all look like one plank to hide the sharp edge a bit, but I gree it didn't really work so i'll go back to it and touch it up at some point (it's been bugging me aswell!)
Thanks for your continued replies, it's good to know somone's keeping an eye on me :),
Swift.

No Problemo Mate, happy to help :)
I'd say go for a rectangular texture... it used to be that most game engines preferred or could not handle rectangular textures, but that is not really true anymore, most modern engines have no trouble with them. Altough I must add that I am not an expert in system optimalisation...
...however to me this seems like a little bit of a wasted opportunity because you could put some wood texure in the other half and use that to texture the wooden parts of the gallows for instance (or you could put 2 sides of a crate into it). That way you'll not only be using square but also lessen the amount of textures in memory.
( notice how it looks like I am an expert now :p )
Cheers! Looking forward to updates

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g68/123ben123_2006/Town.pngThe beginnings of my level, still alot more to do to it.
I have some other props on the boil at teh moment like a lantern, cartwheel and the barrel but I don't want to start adding those in until i've got the big stuff down so I know how much I can afford.
