Can anyone recommend a good toon-style renderer or shader for Maya? I would really like to find one that gets the kind of line style that you can get with Final Toon (http://www.finaltoon.com) or ToonShade (http://www.toonshade.com).

Thanks in advance....

Toonshade, or Tom Cat Toonshader is awesome. You just got to try it. I'm working on a project right now where I use it but I can't show it yet, but here's a little test I did a while ago with Tom Cat 1.1.

This is supposed to look like all sketchy, but you can get perfectly symmetrical toons too, and shaded too:)

I've seen your work before with TomCat, Graf...great stuff. I was showing your animation around the office this morning. What is your experience with what it can do with a more traditional 2d, flat-type style?

I was handed a bunch of artwork from a client and they said "we want it just like this, just animate it...". My first thought was "Why not just get someone to draw the inbetweens instead" but then I saw a possibility to do something different. So now I'm in the middle of doing a very sketchy animation that you really can't say wether it's done traditionally or in 3d. Real fun, actually.

The Tom Cat Toon Shader works fine. There are a few issues, some are paint effects-related and some are not.
*I have a problem with certain brushes being visible through geometry. I haven't found the reason for this so I duplicate working brushes instead of fighting to get new ones working.
*And another thing that didn't work out is the animated lines. I want my outline to jerk around as if it was inked individually on each frame, even on holds. There is an attribute for this in the shader, but I can't get it to work. So I wrote a few expressions on the brush node instead and now it works just the way I want it.

All in all I love the shader. It's so fast rendered that I think it will outrun a simple shaded sphere:rolleyes:. The interface works fine and looks good and you get fantastic results just by using the presets, and $79 is a steal so, what are you waiting for?
