Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of building a farm that renders Renderman files. I plan to have 30 computers 1.7 GHz each within a month.

The renderfarm will be free for use during a testing period of 2 weeks. You can upload your RIB files and textures and expect to have your output ready by the next day, depending on the load. Also, don’t forget to e-mail me with questions, comments, and suggestions.

Hopefully support for PRM11 and below? Don't think we are upgrading past 10 for quite a while.

I've received several questions regarding the Renderman farm. Here's a few of them.

FAQ:

>Which Renderman compliant renderer are you using?

I'm using Aqsis version 0.7.11. I’m interested to find out if scenes designed for Prman will render properly under Aqsis.

>Do you also have any other software?

So far Aqsis is the only tool in my farm. Depending on demand, I'll be adding more software.

>Are you just looking for files to test the farm?

I also need some feedback on the usability of the interface. I want to know if this is something that artists would actually use.

>Once testing is over, are you going to offer rendering service for small projects?

The sizes of the projects are irrelevant. No project is too large or small. Size in this case does not matter :)

>If so, how much will you charge? When does testing begin?

The price is not set yet, but it will definitely be very affordable. The farm is actually a network that has another purpose during the day. I'm only using it at nights so I pass the savings on to the artists.

Testing has already begun, so you can render your scenes, large or small.

I have a pretty hefty 3delight scene if you want to install that on your farm. It took 24 hours to render on my 1.4 ghz Athlon with 256 mb of ram (i know, the ram is the bottleneck)

Well probably some of the most advanced PRman features will not work. Of course there is stuff like DSO which are specific to each renderer, and all the new SL constructs implemented for PRMan 11.

Still it sounds intriguing enough.
