Well, first of all, welcome everyone to the Steampunk contest, I hope you all have fun during the process, learning and having contact with other entrands!
My original idea is to show the creation myth of the islands of Japan, through Izanagi and Izanami. The story basically is that Izanagi and Izanami descended to one island and built themselves a palace and a ceremonial pillar. They devised a wedding ritual, in which they would come around the pillar from opposite sides, recite a marriage vow, and join to produce children.
Using Steampnk style, my idea is to build a machine, similar to a cuckoo clock, where the characters go forward and meet each other in specific time of day. Izanagi and Izanami do the ritual twice, so I thought at noon and midnight ...this information is not relevant to the image, but ...
I still do not have the final image clear in my head, but I think it will be solidified day by day, and with the participation of other people, something that always encourages and helps me move forward with my ideas.
For now it is, I hope you like it.

Jujuba I find your idea so poetic so touching! It is really a great thing to see something as huge as a creation myth being turned into a clock-like machine it will be awesome for sure! I am obviously going to follow your thread very closely! Can't wait to see the actual concept with lots of cogs and machinery stuff!

Thank you all for the support!

Lemog, I hope to post new stuff soon!
madshooter, the link will be a great reference, thanks a lot!
Scied, I´m glad that you liked my choice from japanese myth... I hope to put a lot of machinery stuff soon... probably will start with Izanami, and then go to the castle... I don´t know yet.
JrGraphic, thanks for the reference. Actually, to be honest, I just enter in the contest because of thar specific image, that was in the Inspiraton section...lol (and I´m from 3d4all brazilian forum)

Sorry about my bad english, I´m really trying!

Well... I will post some "warming sketches". I´m just starting with references, studying a lot of Hokusai´s pictures (he´s incredible!) to make my castle, my japanese garden, my textures, blossom-cogs... my idea is to build a scenery very rich in details, the castle and garden with the poetic and preciosism from japanese culture, I want to pay atention in every detail, to make the final image not just steampunk, but, as I said so, a little poetic. Hope I can do it!

Another study, this time, started to make some patterns to Izanami?s kimono, and blossom-gears to my cucko.

Hokusai is very very good reference... I've made many years ago a pic inspired by his art... well... his art's universe is incredible...

This is my first Izanami concept. I still don?t like her, guess maybe some more cogs and mechanical stuff will help... bus I?ll surely keep the huge hair... what do you think? Any idea and opinion is welcome!

Hey Jujuba, nice sketch I think it shows more the cloth and proportions than the actual character itself! If I should make any comments it would be for you to try and do something more towards the final image like material study as we can't see very well which part is made of which material... I think it would improve very much the whole aspect of your character. You can leave the sepia filters for the very end of the final image rather than thinking it in sepia from the begining! keep on posting ^^

The model is very pleasant for my eyes... of course... but some point make me think is not finally the more adapted in this case.

The pose is maybe too much right, too serious and clean... that need certainly something more epic and certainly more proud...
...and also, that's not enough steampunk... but the started look could be used anyway... as a base...
...a keep the hair cut of course

This is one basic Izanagi?s cloth study. I needed to make these two characters, Izanagi and Izanami to start to think in the final image, and now I think the idea is clearing in my head... probably the next post will me a wip study from scenario and framework... I hope! lol

well, this is the first study of the castle. As you can see, the colors are a bit ...exaggerated.
But the idea now is seeing the whole, and see how things are behaving together. The brown is the wood, the roofs are blue, walls pink, green the details under the roof and orange is where I'll insert gears, furnaces, screws and other steampunk gadgets.
I?m working on the details, will post as soon as possible!

Once again the contest has ended and I wasn?t able to finish... It?s a pitty but I did my best and learned a lot with the whole process. Although the contest has oficially closed, I meant to finish the image...

This is how far I got.
See ya at the next contest!
