View Full Version : Photoshop & Japanese Language Kit/IME
armaghedron 06-17-2003, 12:21 PM Hey all .... I recently installed the Japanese Language Kit so I could type Japanese characters. Everything works fine with the Microsoft programs but I can't get the characters to display properly in other programs (like Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, etc)
Does anybody know how I can fix this?

Maybe you could try changing the setting "Language for non-Unicode programs" to Japanese and then restarting, I believe that fixed it for many people...

Okay I tried looking for that option but couldn't find it. Where is it?

I've noticed that those kind of apps are font specific. Try checking to see if u have that specific font loaded in photoshop when ur typgin. Taking for example the Vietnamese font... Vietnamese uses regular romanized letters but have far more accent marks than regular english. In that instance, the application I use is VPSKeys which installs a new set of Times New Roman, Arial, and all those other default fonts. The new set of fonts is the same as the old, but they come with more symbol options for accent marks. However, if the font isn't selected, it just won't come up.... that might be the issue ur running into.

Well I made sure that the right font was selected but the Japanese figures won't come up. I tried using the character map and copy and pasted while the same font was selected but that didn't work either. I found a way to get Japanese characters into those programs but it'd be much easier if I could just do it directly.

which method are u currently using? Screen shot, copy, and paste?

Yeah, basically that's how I do it. Then if I need to use it as a vector-based image i import it into Flash and trace the bitmap, saving it to an AI file.

man, that is pretty cumbersome... so can u explain in detail what happens when u try to input it directly? I'm not too clear about what happens when u try.

In your Windows control-panel go to "regional and language-options" or something similar, depending on which OS you are using it may be different.
Then in the "language"-tab check "Install files for east-asian languages". And on the "advanced"-tab choose Japanese for "Language for non-Unicode programs" and then you MUST restart - after that it works (for me anyway)!
singularity2006 was correct in stating that your fonts must support Japanese characters - try MS Mincho, that one will work with Japanese!
Oh, just so we're not missing the basics: I assume you know that you must switch to kana -input in the IME language bar?

To singularity2006: Well when I input romanized characters (A-Z) numbers and other regular symbols from the keyboard it works fine. But when I try to enter in a kanji or kana character it comes out as something else. And, I have been using the MS Mincho font.
To stefanminning: I tried what you suggested and it works fine now.
Thanks you guys!
