Are you using raytracing?
I tried with raytracing shadow, it works just fine.

what does mental ray has to do with that ?

raytracing is also available for standart maya software rendering...

Well I suggest that you build a another scene with all fluids light attributes, software renderer raytracing shadow attributes and raytracing attributes of a light left default. Maybe not having the plane and the fluid intersecting.
Good luck.

Besides, Maya Software has Raytracing turned off by default while Mental Ray has it turned on. Check the render settings (we donīt call them render globals anymore ;)
