View Full Version : Need Help with Dynamic hair for game models
KKADUKEN 11-24-2008, 11:06 PM Anyone have any tips for animating dynamic hair for game models. Something similar to Elika in the new Prince of Persia.
I've modeled the hair, But I don't want it to just sit there.

Are you sure those hair are dynamic and not baked skeletal animation?

I dunno. I never considered an approach like that. have any links to places that give some tips on that subject?
Well... they could be animated with bones, as everything else (i think that`s the usual way), or hair deformation could be baked on geometry and animated as blendshapes/morphs.
Bakin means that for example you have dynamicly driven skeleton hierarchy, let`s say tail, or maybe even hair. Then you bake it`s movement, which means that in every frame Maya (or whatever you use) sets a key with proper rotations (or whatever parameter you want) in that particular frame.
Thanks to that you can use almost anything to animate: keyframes, physics, constrains, expressions, you name it, and then just bake everything into simple keyframe animation.
Other example - which I did once or twice - can be destroyin brick wall.
You can hook it up to Havok or any other engine, set up simulation and then bind joints to every piece of that wall, bake animation from you simulation into joints, then bind wall pieces to joints and there you go: physicly correct collapsing wall as keyframe animation, which can be used in almost any game engine.
Phew, I hope you can understand anything from this ;)
