Story. Don't have one? Get one. No point starting if you don't.

What is your character about, what does he have to do?

Sketch, refine, sketch poses and facial expressions. Create a story board. Refine that too. Animation is 90% in the planning. Storyboards will help you determine the camera set up too.

Create your definitive character sheet to model from.

Model it. Knowing what your character has to do will help you to determine how the model should be built.

Rig it. Try it, refine it, try it again. Try to keep it as simple as possible. A lot of people suggest and say that we use hundreds of controllers for our characters, well, that may be, but we link them and rig them so that the aniamtor has as few to deal with as possible.

Animate the character. Make it just how you wanted it.

Animate the face (if applicable)

Refine, watch for the golden rules. Refine again.

Shade the model (this can be done at the time of modelling, but now is just as good)

Light the scene and place the camera. Render.

Enjoy.
