Look, before you guys make fun of me, remember I am a COMPLETE newb at Photoshop. I took this picture of my two friends and decided I wanted to make it feel like a classic, hand-painted picture. I still need ALOT of help. Crits only please. :thumbsdow

Uhm nice filter?

Right to actually make it look like a old paining - u need to actually paint it...

Adding a filter = :shame: and also :thumbsdow

I disagree Mucha....I think digital NUT wants to learn how to use photoshop better, not how to paint...

I alos think filters=:buttrock: and a lot faster then painting...

digital NUT,
I thing its a good start...the more you mess with photoshop the better you'll get at it...it an amazing piece of software...
critique: humm... It looks too blury to me...try making a copy of the original, putting on the layer on top and then doing some blend modes. ....exam. like screen or softlight...

I don't think the classical "painting look" is about one filter.
I think you could get really close to it by using other filter.

for example, you could use that filter, plus the find edges, and maybe the Median cut, or median.
but I don't know.

don't mind If I give it a go...

You might also try adjusting the coloration a bit. Right now, the colors are still very photorealistic. If you experimented with hue/saturation, you might find that it looks more painterly and expressionistic.

In Photoshop, select Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation

Then, for example, try adjusting the Hue slightly to the left and then increasing the Saturation a bit. It might give more of a mixed-paint feeling.

You may find that one lingering problem with trying to reduce the photographic appearance is always going to be the absolute precision of the figures and scene perspective. Unfortunately, it would require more manual work with the brush tools to alter that enough to give the appearance of an "artist's hand".

[Edit: You might also try experimenting with Filter>Texture>Texturizer to give a slight canvas look to it]

Hope this helps,
-Tone

Thanks alot CGtone, I think the hue effect makes the picture more...colorful in a sense. Check these out and tell me if they look any better.:scream:

nice effort so far...sometimes it helps (at least for me) if you pick out certain areas of the pic duplicate them and tweak like whatever you want to do and add them with more/less transparency to your other layer....as a suggestion mask out your (i assume freely) girlfriend and play around some more with filters (if you don't wanna paint anything) and see if you can make her someway more outstanding in the pic...

and you know keep us updated ;)
