THE X FACTOR: INSIDE MICROSOFT'S XBOX

L.A. Filmmaker Blows the Lid off the Xbox

Los Angeles, CA (June 13, 2003) - FilmOasis, Inc., a Los Angeles-based production company exposes what it takes to make a game for Microsoft in their one hour Discovery Channel program, The X FACTOR: Inside Microsoft's Xbox, part of Discovery Channel's "On the Inside" series premiering Friday, June 20, 2003, at 8 PM (ET/PT). Going where no cameras have ever gone before, The X FACTOR program reveals never-before-seen footage of Microsoft and three game studios all racing to complete the next big Xbox blockbuster game. Inside these studios, the effort to build the next million-selling game is intense. Will the next Xbox superstar be Microsoft's Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Oddworld Inhabitants' tightly held secret (the fourth game in their ongoing series), or Bungie's Halo 2? The X FACTOR lets viewers decide for themselves by following these three games in development and the teams creating them through many phases of the game production process, and by offering exclusive interviews with Microsoft's vice president of its game studios, Ed Fries; Bungie's project lead, Jason Jones; the design lead of Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Jim Deal; the president/creative director of Oddworld Inhabitants, Lorne Lanning; and many more.

The X FACTOR program also explores whether the software giant has the mettle to make it in the exploding video game business - an industry that surpasses the movie industry more and more every year. Can this company known for innovation in business software really have the know-how to make a 5-billion dollar gamble in fun?

"Microsoft is placing a big bet with the Xbox. It will be just another door stop if the games aren't fun. It is really that simple," said James McQuillan, co-founder and filmmaker for FilmOasis. "The X FACTOR lets the audience see for themselves what it takes to get the nod from Microsoft to produce a game for the Xbox and explores whether Microsoft is on the right track."

Each game costs millions of dollars to develop, and 60 percent of them fail. In The X FACTOR, viewers get a glimpse inside the production process, from concept art to "go/no-go" meetings, where the teams have to make their case to Microsoft in order to keep their funding. Hard decisions are made, projects succeed and fail, and the viewer gets to watch it all happen from the inside.

The X FACTOR also examines Xbox Live, Microsoft's proprietary online gaming service, which allows gamers around the world to compete against each other over high-speed Internet connections. Microsoft is betting that the broadband technology they've built into the Xbox is their ticket to dominating the video game industry. They're designing the ultimate place where social experiences and online gaming co-exist. If they succeed, every game will have a LIVE component-- making it possible for Microsoft to own the largest entertainment web site in the world.

In short, the Xbox isn't just about games: it's a key component to Microsoft's long-term strategy to move from the office into the living room. Microsoft's new battlefield is your TV.

The X FACTOR will premiere on the Discovery Channel, one of the United States' two largest cable television networks, serving 86.6 million households across the nation with the finest in informative entertainment. Discovery Networks, a division of Discovery Communications, Inc., operates and manages Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Kids Channel, Discovery Science Channel, Discovery Home & Leisure Channel, Discovery Civilization Channel, Discovery Wings Channel, and Discovery en Espaņol. The unit also markets and distributes BBC America.

Sounds cool. It's always more entertaining watching how other people make games rather than actually making them yourself. It's like having all the highs and lows comressed into one bite sized piece, partially digested and ready for consumption.

Hey Anim8rJB I didn't mean to miss you, maybe you shouldn't be so secretive about where you work. Try giving us a clue like a Halo related avatar or a signature or something;) Sorry I'm just really blind. Yea bentllama's right Jez is over here in NY. As a matter of fact we're having a foosball tournament at work tomorrow and he happens to be the first person I'm up against. I'm gonna get creamed. Good luck to you guys on the TV special.

Goddamit!, it's not being aired on Discovery-Europe. And for the convience of its viewers they don't seem to've included a search-button on their website to find out when, if at all, it will be.

Mmm.

Very cool I just finished watching it and enjoyed it alot. I'ts showing again at 11:00 so I might tape it. You can also spot bentllama sporting a canadian cap and animating the Master Chief. It looks like he was doing squat thrusts. I'm glad they touched on a few things going on in the industry. Mainly the percentage of games getting made, how many actually make it out the door, and how many actually become a hit. I think when you see alot of threads talking about the lack of art or originality etc. In a game they fail to realize a few things. It's a huge team effort, alot of money is involved, and few publishers are willing to take risks on originality or artistic expression. It's very much a 2 edged sword though because those games that end up being monster hits are usually the ones that are the original ideas. Still there was alot of good content in the show you guys should definately watch.

glad to hear you liked what you saw of our new stuff.

Very interesting show. Pretty draconian how they axed that crimson crew though. Seems the little injuns got punished for following the chiefs' orders.
Anyway, Halo2 and Oddworld are going to rock. And with his world wide tv debut, will success go to the bentlama's head? (gawd, think of all the women...)

Great show. I really enjoyed seeing the inside stuff on both Oddworld and Bungie's games. Man Mosafacku you lucky little jerk, remember who taught you and help a brotha out! Bent, Those were some BRIGHT ASS pants/shorts you were wearing when the big group was shot. I saw you leaning against something. And then animating the SQUAT THRUST (you know it was). Great job by all teams.

I will ask the producer.

That would be cool. I did check the site and didn't see any mention of future airdates so it would probably be best to get it from the source heheh.

BTW congrats on the show. The part I did see was cool and like everyone else, I can't wait for halo2

The producer will likely have no idea when it will air again. Your best bet is to just check your local listings and watch the Discovery.com website for details. The 'On The Inside' programs tend not to repeat that much, however, I know a bunch of people have DV recorded it and have put it up on the web for download. Chances are you'll be able to find one of those before it will air again.

Did you think of having a Molson or Blue on your desk while the crew was filming? Or a Tim Horton's cup? :)

Reminds me of "Spaz" Williams's desk in publicity photos, when he was still at ILM: flag and a big Don Cherry poster.
