View Full Version : Wacom 4D Mouse
I've just picked up a Wacom 4D Mouse and would like to know how you setup the Wacom 4D Mouse to function like the AW Vid...(http://www.aliaswavefront.com//en/Community/Discover/research/videos/movies/TwoHandedModeling_high.mov)
I've had a look at the 4d Mouse Maya Server by Maarten Gribnau (http://home.wanadoo.nl/margoweijer/maarten/4DMouseMayaServer.html) but it doesn't function the same way as the video...
Any ideas?

I asked Bill Buxton this very question once, and apparently they are not allowed to release the plugin for anything other than IRIX, for some legal reasons.
I've got the IRIX plugin that Bill sent to me around here somewhere...what OS are you on?
whoa that's unfortunate.... I'm on Windows (doh!), so I guess it's a no-go then... (I do feel somewhat miffed about how they show they show the windows version being used in the videos!)
I might just settle with the 4d Mouse Maya Server then...
thanks for your reply!

I think all you need to do is to remap wacom mouse buttons. One of them would be an "alt" key so you don't need to use the keyboard. Used to be much more comfortable with their old (pre-intuos2) mice.
By the way there's nothing Maya-specific about this. It's just that the "chief scientist" dude is a major alternative input-devices geek. I think he even has a website on the subject. I wish they wrote a spaceball support into maya if they are into alternative input.
What sucks about wacom though is that if you try using both the mouse and the pen in a mouse mode (as opposed to pen) it gets all screwd up. I hate the pen mode personally.
well, I've been looking @ the 4d Mouse Maya Server's mel scripts and it looks like it should be quite tweekable (well, after I learn a little mel of course :p)
I quite like the idea of alternative input devices too... hmmm, I bought a nostromo (http://www.lanaddict.com/reviews/n50/Nostromo%20Product%20Shots%20008.jpg) which you can bind to keystrokes, and was thinking about getting some foot pedals... I dunno, I get a kick out of different ways to interface with the same apps :) I was hoping, in the back of my mind anywayz, for a dual mouse setup.... use the wacom mouse to swivel around the model, and my normal mouse to do all the modelling, etc. (So, I need a little more than just binding Alt to the wacom mouse)
it's interesting how in the help files, under the stuff like "attachDeviceAttr" in the Mel ref, there's snippets of mel examples of spaceball and sometimes wacom input devices, like : attachDeviceAttr -d "spaceball" -ax "XAxis" "surface1.translateX";
hmmm according to the help files, it seems that anyone can make a DataServer which can stream the input device information into Maya (which is what the 4d Mouse Maya Server kinda does), so I guess it's just a matter of learning more mel and getting that to work with the 4d Mouse Maya Server better ;)

May I Install in Maya 4.5?????
Hmmm the 4d Mouse Maya Server by Maarten Gribnau (http://home.wanadoo.nl/margoweijer/...MayaServer.html) seems to work for virtually version of Maya afaik, as it's a stand alone app with a bunch of scripts... it works on Maya 4.5

Oh, I see what you mean.
That's interesting about spaceball in mel samples. Let us know if you figure it out.

Any developments on this front? I am tracking these threads to see what people are digging up in the realm of connecting various forms of input into the Device Editor for Maya. Seems to me there should be room for things like Mouse events to trigger animations, perhaps sound driving attributes, etc... would love to see some links or further discussion on the possibility of this approach...
