View Full Version : Book about texturing?
healer 06-16-2003, 10:52 PM Please help an old man. Until now, i have been watching for an texturing book but I have not found one yet. I´m searching for a generall book about the basics to produce useful textures. I saw the workshops on this page (very good) but I´m such a man who wants to smell and taste the wonderful sides of a fresh new book.
For example: Can you recommend the book of Digital "Texturing and Painting" ? (I hope I posted in the right forum) :buttrock:

That particular book is an interesting read. I have only very recently had a chance to look at it, and in my honest opinion, I would have to warn you that it isn't the most practical book. It's very errmmmm.... artsy fartsy if you know what I mean. So it is definitely an interesting read, but I am not sure how well it would teach everyone to texture. Sure, a lot of people would find it would help them a lot, but some people need more specific stuff.
Cool things about the book are that it is in colour, on nicely quality paper, and that it has loads of pictures. It is also pretty easy to read. On the downside, most of the pics seem to be photos, and not really step by step texturing processes or renders...

If you want a good texture book, Leigh will publish a texture book of her own. Just make her write faster!

Thanks for your answering Ligh. Your opinion is the same as a critical comment by amazon.
But does anyone know a helpful book for me?
Hi
Just recently I bought 3D Texture Workshop - 'painting hollywood creature textures' from Bill Fleming which is awesome imho.
I teaches how to make very realistic bumpmap, specular. diffuse and color maps for a Frankenstein head but this can easily be applied to any character. I especially like the workflow which he described which makes a lot of sens namely, starting with the bump texture instead of the color and deriving the others from the bump texture (apologies for my bad english).

Yes, I read an article about this book. It should be a great one. But has anyone another good booktip. It also could be a bokk in PS.:)
I just got pointed to this thread yesterday: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63000#post590580
Before you buy Bill's book you may want to have a look there and read the pro's and con's. Anyway, I just started painting my own textures and Bill's book is really helping me on my way. However, I keep in mind his method is not perfect and the only way you can learn to create good textures is by trying out methods, observe reality and do it a lot.
I just wanted to write this because untill yesterday I was not aware of the controversy with Bill Fleming's methods :)
