so again a new concept. i finally decided to join you guys here because i've got some sparetime now. i know it's late but probably i manage to get this done until deadline.
the idea is to create a steampunk version of arnold b?cklins isle of the dead which is a painting that always fascinated me. i like to develop my paintings during the process, so let's have a look how this one is going on
good luck to everyone

i started to paint the woman on the island. then i decided to mirror the position because in my opinion it fits the composition much better if she looks into the light.

so now the last post for today. i roughly worked out lights and shadows to get the overall feeling right. some textures were added and continued painting the woman's skin.

hi,
so now i am working on the anatomy and the skin. i decided to hide the woman's face behind a mask which makes her more unreachable and a bit mystical.
i am not sure i can finish this until deadline. but i try hard to reach this aim.
have a nice day

now i am painting the ropes which tie her to the island and i added detail and texture to the piles of metal beside her. i cleaned the background to get a nice surface for the next steps

i started painting the water, the reflections and light on the water.
i try to create a calm atmosphere which is quite a contrast compared to the chaotic metalpiles on the island.

finally the rough structure of the painting is finished. i painted some more reflections and the clouds in the sky. the overallmood fits my intentions quite well.

good morning. again in front of the computer. i hope to finish this piece today and i think it is time to reveale my inspiration sources. i am sure everyone knows ren? magritte. And the second inspiration (boecklins painting the isle of the dead) always fascinated me, as i told you before. the lightening is and mood of that painting is almost ruminant for me;)
i worked out my idea with a sort of brainstorming and then thought about 'mythical' paintings i really liked
so have good day

Finally I managed to end this an I am happy I could. This piece took me about 30h over the last three days and I don?t want to see this anymore. Nevertheless, here are some words about the painting:
I started with a brainstorming about myths and legends. Nothing very creative came to my head until I thought about that painting of Arnold Boecklin. He is quite famous swiss painter who was born 1827 in Basel and died in 1901 in San Domenico (Italy). He made several paintings about the Isle of the Dead. One of those has always inspired me in particular (http://www.arnoldbocklin.com/ab_isleofthedead.htm). I decided to create a Isle of the Death in steampunkstyle. Sketching was done traditionally on paper, then I worked out everything in photoshop. The dimension is about 8000x5800 pixels.
The woman on the Island is the mother who takes all the lives back she gave one day. The bodies are burnt in the ovens of the Isle. Steam and smoke spirals to the skies where souls and matter are purified in the atmosphere and then slowly getting back to Earth where the substances come to life in many different shapes. Every creature lives on our planet until it returns home into the ovens of the Isle of the Dead.
