Amazing character you made here :) I'm not sure if it looks friendly or evil. Maybe both.

Neubius, Confuzzled- thanks for your kind words...
MartinNielsen- well, at first, both design and pose of the wolf was super evil. then I gave it a second thought... the scene felt so very superficial. so I took a turn, and changed the wolf into a character that both red riding hood & the viewers can relate to.

any way, last night I decided to try to deal with the tale of Pinocchio. I tried to give it the twist of the steam punk world. I used some really neat ww1 tank ref.
it cost me a few hours of my night sleep, but who cares? It's made me happy like hell. I just need to find a way of deal with the exhaustion, and I'm cool...

The tale of Stromboli:
"Charm and flattery are the facade for this heartless showman who burns his puppets for firewood when they've grown too old to perform. Money is the puppeteer's sole passion, and his marionettes are only a means to an end. As soon as Stromboli realizes Pinocchio's carnival potential -- a puppet who can sing and dance without strings -- he'll stop at nothing. Only kidnapping can ensure this "little wooden gold mine" keeps performing for him, whether Pinocchio likes it or not."
http://disney.go.com/vault/archives/villains/stromboli/stromboli.html

For the evil Stromboli design, which is my favorite character in this scene, I found "Harold Zidler" from the "Moulin Rouge" to be a fantastic match.
Updates are coming soon.

Womball- TNX!
my knowledge of this story is based of the wanderful Disney film (1940), and also on one of my favorite japanese animation tv series "The Adventures of Piccolino"http://anime-times.blogspot.com/2007/02/adventures-of-piccolino.html ((link)), that was shown in Israel back at the 80's, when I was a boy.
Stromboli aka Mangiafuoco, is an evil puppet master which kidnapes pinocchio and force him to take part in his show. more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stromboli_(Pinocchio) (here)
And I'm an old school 2d guy.

Hello guys!
Started looking for the right framing that will reflect the story right... at my first sketch, Pinocchio was already locked away, but then I realized there was no tension in the story. it's cost me the info of Stromboli feeding on wood, but maybe it's still exist as a sub-text.

What a fantastic gem of a thread! Some gorgeous ideas in here, and like Walrus, I love the shapes in your concepts. The standalone piece of stromboli is brilliant, I could almost see that as a finished piece in itself!

If I had to nitpick (and it's hard!) I'd say that the current sketch you have lacks something of the threat that stromboli has in your earlier images. He almost looks friendly.. which I know is kind of the point, given I'm guessing it's where Pinocchio first meets him, but I love the meaner look he has in some of your earlier stuff.

Just my personal thoughts though, feel free to carry on as you were, as I'm sure it'll turn out to be a fabulous image all the same!

Samantha- your thoughts are just the thing I'm looking for... while tangled in my own ideas, it's very helpful to hear others interpretation of the concept. well, you got it right- just like you say: Stromboli kick ass when he is more evil, but then again, he is still need to be deceiver. still, the whole thing need to be more dynamic.
For me it's always the hardest part in the puzzle. nothing that a bit of a thinking won't solve.
Thanks a lot

And for me THE WARM ONE suit better. More steampunkish i guess. And it looks (the warm one) like You've put less effortt on it (no offence). So i think if would work more on "warm", You could achvie the same or better darky mood like in the cold one...
...maybe "warm" is too bright.
And i like this slime green on the bottom, sneaking behind poor Pinokio.

But in the end it still has mood weather it is warm or cold.
It is up to You, untill You listen to the majority ;)

The details are really coming together nicely on this so far. One thing that's changed from your earlier sketch is the bridge: It's become a lot skinnier and now it just doesn't look like there's any way for Stromboli even fits on it. He looks like his treads aren't even traveling parallel to the bridge but at an angle to it - and that just emphasized its skinniness, because there's no way he would have approached that spot at an angle. That very first bridge sketch you posted had a much more workable width... nice curves to it, too! But aside from that, it looks great - I've really loved watching your design on this one. Good luck!

About my work:
I found Stromboli to be a perfect steam punk character who runs on steam, by feeding itself on the poor puppets woods. I choose to combine the carriage, which is usually a very colorful object, with the gear and metal of a tank, which symbolize the true nature of this villain

This looks really terrific, Lior! Nice work! I have two suggestions for you:

First, I love the diffused, scattered light you have in the front of the stromboli-mobile, where the headlights are. It really makes the atmosphere seem misty and atmospheric. It would be nice to see you carry that atmosphere through the rest of the piece. What about pink light on the right coming from the circular lights on the side and bouncing off of the mist there? And orange by the smokestack?

Secondly, I confess to not knowing exactly how things work with the submitting of the final image, but I was always under the impression that the last final image is the one judges see. (Guess I'll know soon.) Anyhow, to be safe, you might want to make sure that your final Final Image is your whole piece, not the close-up shot. You wouldn't want to be judged on the wrong thing. (Or you could just confirm that it doesn't matter - as I said, I'm not quite clear on it.)

Good luck, and nice work.

lioration
01-19-2009, 09:22 PM
Womball, JackZhang: thanks guys. it's nice to here your words.

dzygn: "Greatest Masterpiece around"? hmmm, my work? you must be kidding- take a look around- I am such a novice compared to all the pro's around. but when it's comes from a master like you it's a huge compliment. I will be the first to read your tut if you'll publish one- your technic for shading and coloring amazed me.
about my inspiration- my brainstorming is usually done while I'm riding the train on my way to work. usually, before starting a concept I put a lot of effort in reaserch- finding ref, ideas, and designs. the small details is what I am after- I try to give meaning to every object and symbol in the scene so it will help to support the big story.

walrus: Thanks man- you've been very help full along the way- it's appreciated.
about your suggestions, it's too late for changes buddy- I nearly killed my self not sleeping over this piece, while trying to run a normal life with two kids and a day job, and once the original deadline was over, I just moved on and decided to let go.
You are right about the atmosphere- some more job need to be done- maybe when I will gain some strengths.
about the final version- I hope the common sense of the judges will work, and a picture under the title "blowup details" with a low rez, will not be conceder as my final piece.
maybe it's better of to make sure, and keep the informed.
Thanks again.

This is definately one of favourite ones:) Im loving the solidness to the bridge an the how heavy the tank bit feels. I like the different hues around his metalic neck collar also. A very very nice finished piece. Well done:)

What a hidden Gem! I missed this thread completely!

Fully fantastic and one of my favorites in this competition. I liked the little red riding hood concept but it seemed a little...I dunno, too much like the fantastic circus image you did last year with the little girl. I thought the girl was an artistic signature of some sorts! So anyway, was happy you went with the wooden boy instead and pssshhh respect for the final piece. The details on the villain are really well thought-out. Top Row for me :)

Wow! didn't expect to get so many comments, must say...
thank you all for taking the time to write down your feed backs and impressions. it's nice to know that all the small details are being noticed.

Adam my friend - didn't expect to see you around, and what a pleasant surprise!
about my red riding hood sketch- well, you said it yourself- no artistic signature involve, only some bad habit going for the familiar places. but even though I went for the wooden boy choice, I still feel as if I didn't used the full potentials of this concept... I had in mind a whole different setup for this scene, that was way too complicated for such a tight deadline.
and yes- The villain took about 80% of the concept and execution.. I guess I fell in love with him along the way.
Thanks so much for dropping by.
