That section of the model has either corrupt or unassigned UVW mapping.
If you hit the render button, do you get en error? If so, you'l need to apply the proper UVW coordinated to get the check map to look right.

yeah I think I got it now.... the model is just one big piece. I detached all the parts and add uvw map and now it works better.
hmm I still have the problem that some polygons have like twice as many black/white squares as the others. :shrug:

Then you'l need to scale their UVs to fit properly.
