View Full Version : Illustrator outlines to After Effects?
Seran 11-21-2008, 04:07 AM I'm trying to figure out how to get my outline paths from Illustrator to After Effects.
I tryed making an outline path in Illustrator, and exporting it as an AI. However, the imported image is automatically rasterized and I lose my outlines.
The tutorial i'm working on says:
1. Create Logo Outline Path using Illustrator. (It is Single Path)
2. Create a New Composition. (640x480)
3. Create a Black New Solid. (640x480)
4. Copy and Paste to Mask Path from Illustrator.
So... How the heck do I inadvertently select the entire mask path, and exclude the raster image? x.x Maybe I'm looking too hard into this. I'm sure it's a simple issue.

I don't follow. It says "Copy&Paste", not "Import", which are two completely different things. "Copy&Paste" refers to inserting items via the clipboard whose functions are accessible in the "Edit" menu in pretty much any app on that planet. This sort of roundtripping is used for a variety of processes between different Adobe apps, so read up on which app supports which data types via the clipboard.

If you're trying to paste an Illustrator spline onto a mask shape/mask path in AE, make sure that you have the actual mask shape/mask path (the word) in the timeline prior to pasting it.
If you just have the layer selected, it may not work.
Mylenium, you're fielding all the pop-flies over here, aren't you?

Hmm I'm not sure. I think the tutorials are translations. This is the original site with the tutorial. I'm currently stuck on step 5.

Evidentally it's supposed to look like this:

Any insight would be great :3 I'm not very well versed in AE yet.

Mr. Ayato's tips are cryptic, indeed, but that part is easy. Create the text in AI. Convert it to outlines. Merge the individual letters into a contiguous path using Pathfinder and manual vertex join operations. Then simply select the path with the move tool, copy it to the clipboard. Switch over to AE. Create a solid. Use Paste to insert the path from the clipboard as a mask. Now add the Vegas effect and have it reference that mask as laid out in the tutorial...
