im assuming this means they are going to be doing full length feature animations of their own then.......cuz they have already done animation for features.

Can anyone confirm this? when did Keith head over, and is it just a side job, or is it permanent?

The company has moved into a new, state-of-the-art computer animation studio that, at 20,000 square feet, is nearly triple the size of its former headquarters.

So their origional stuido was around 6500 sqaure feet? DUDE THAT IS FREAKING SMALL! My origional 1 bed room apartment when I moved out of my parents house was bigger than that! They must have been cramped! The only concern I have about their new place is that it must get pretty loud in there it looks like the walls and floor are concrete.

Also it's it Stargate SG-1 not Stargate SG-I, just thought I would point that out.

well, remember that there were a hell of a lot less ppl in teh old studio. though while i wasn't there.. i heard it was pretty damn cramped.

and actualy its really not that loud. the open air, and high ceiligns really desipate the sound. plus w/ every one workign fairly intently, theres not much chit chatting going on.

your 1 bedroom apartment was over six thousand square feet? i think your math is off - maybe 650 square feet? but that still would be a room that is 22 feet by 30 feet. (the average bedroom size is a 10 x 12 ft this would be 120 square feet)

20,000 square feet is 200 x 100 feet

just thought i would point that out before you get killed in the real estate market...

Blur used to be in 3 bldgs in the northern end of Abbot Kinney Blvd, just down the street from PLF and Grey Matter (closer to Digital Domain). During the time I was there it wasn't cramped at all and was organized quite well. The new space is amazing. What you see in the pic is a portion of it, the main 3d area where the artists work (and play) together. I think you can see one of the Splutterfishies in the corner over there ;)

Quote their web site:

"We don't expand and contract like a lot of other studios - no freelance artists. If a job doesn't fit into our schedule, we just don't take it"

That was a good philosophy. A lot of studios are starting up CG features, now, and the market won't be able to accomodate them all for long. I sure hope Blur knows what they are doing.

Man...that's great news. Blur has always done a great job with the work they do.

Get ready to see BRAZIL become the standard in CG animation boys and grrlllzzz!

Congrats to everyone at Blur & Splutterfish if you are reading this! All your hard work has definitely paid off!

if you go to www.artbyfeng.com under Set Design (Film) you can see some of the concept art for the movie they're developing called Mindbridge. I think some of the other categories have some concepts as well.

it's worth looking at Feng's concept art anyhow. he's awesome.

wow, you know, i didn't know about blur studios until just now. Their environment looks really cool, much cooler than my bedroom-studio. Haha, that's a fabrication, I operate nothing like a studio. Not like that nice big concrete room with the ability to start full feature productions and finish them in-house. Take off, hehe. I'm going to get hired by blur one day. hehe, it was blizzard lastnight... So many companies are getting so big.

edit: oops, sorry, this isn't azrael... This is Aerestis. I forgot to switch from his log-in, heh.

Hi, yes blur is a really nice studio (btw, greetings to Irfan, our german delegate there :) )

Ok, I'm posting here, because I found something on Jeremy Cook's (blur employee) site. (hope not to make this thread off topic too much)

http://www.2d2cg.com/eex.htm

"This is by far the fastest project I've ever worked on.
It was completed, concept to final, in less than 6 days."

HOW, THE HELL IS THIS POSSIBLE ????
I mean, I didn't saw the trailer, but the pics there talking its own words. How many ppl worked on it? Was it really done from scratch, without any premade models?

BIGGEST RESPECT :)

Michael

If Blur goes at it, they will probably introduce something like a very unique and different style, and I have the feeling that theirs will look better or at least as good as Final Fantasy.
The 6 Day Project is WOW !!!! Amazing result.

Actually, Feng is at the ranch working on concept for episode 3, which, while also owned by George lucas, is a different entity from ILM.

Yes, that is possible, I saw it happen. It's mainly due to 1), neither jeremy or feng got any sleep <G> (I don't recall anyone else working on the project except those two). and 2) jeremy is a sick fast modeler.

My ears were itching when I read this thread. :)
Yeah, I started work at Blur last Monday. It's a very cool place, really great people and groovy cool projects, with even cooler ones to come along. I'm already off and running on a couple projects. I love the big open room. It's not at all loud until the daily Quake game, then it gets pretty lively for 45 minutes. ;) I like being able to walk over to another artist and just talk to them without the boundaries and limitations of departments, turf wars, etc. Its one big team (70+ now) of uber talented artists. Very international flavor, too. Lots of guys from all over. Europe, Korea, Turkey, South Africa, you name it. It's a good mix.
The studio is pretty close to the beach. You can walk to the water in about 15-20 minutes if you wanted to. Haven't taken lunch down there yet.

I dunno dude, Blur actually made it policy to play for 45 mins in the afternoon - that's pretty cool! We'd try to keep it quiet when clients were around, but it rarely worked. Usually it started with Neil Blevins and Tim Wallace planning out the teams in secret, writing them on a board, then at 2 or 3PM the PA would announce "Game's up, teams are on the board" and mayhem would ensure.

I'm not a quaker, but I had so much fun playing with those guys. Still to this day I duck in for a game on friday evenings after work ;)

Keith,

I'm glad I ran across this thread. I visited your site and saw you had the "Evelyn" short film posted again.

I remember it from year(s?) ago and I have to say that it has to be one of the all time sadest 3D animations I ever watched. Great feeling, great timing, great lighting, perfect sound track.
