View Full Version : guns advert
GlennIsrael 06-16-2003, 04:44 PM An older piece, these are a few guns I illustrated and compiled into a mock advertisement for a futuristic arms manufacturer. At that point in the project, the specifications called for a sense of 'realism', so I tried to find and tie together some interesting shapes in existing production and prototypical weapons.
I hope the German text means what I meant it too :-)

top one:
your ejector port (what i think it is) is on the wrong side of the gun, the majority of the population is right handed... so if you've got the gun snug against your shoulder, the hot caseings, go right into your face...a burned face isn't fun.
middle one:
it's a sniper rifle.. yes? make it a higher calibur, your not going to have enough range with a 7.62 round...
bottom one:
how are you going to hold it up... again with the right handed-majority here... you've gotta have two handles on that puppy, and well, you've got it on the wrong side (the one that doesn't matter)
ok, ust saw the handle... but after testing it out... your gun holds like my vaccum cleaner...

Thanks for the corrections, Michael :-)
Delarosa, there are a few assumptions that have to be made to accomodate the shooter audience. One is that the character will always be right-handed, looking down the left of the gun, so you have to concentrate animated parts on the left-hand side or top for effect. The slide chambers a caseless round rather than ejects spent shells, and is (or rather, was) only used during reload animations.
You're definately right about calibers, but I was going for a unified ammunition standard that operates just outside of reality.
Personally, I think conventional weapons will have had there day by this point in the future, but skull guns and popcorn rounds a la 'The Diamond Age' unfortunately don't make for the most compelling visuals.
You're right about the 'vacuum-cleaner' hold as well :-) The rear firing grip was lifted straight from reality though (although I assume the real weapon is meant for a pintel mount or something). Perhaps the forehand grip and frame that I added makes the carriage a little weird, but it needed something for balance and a sensible tag-point for the character's left-hand.
Thanks :-)

7.62x51 is 308, 7.62x54 is the dragunov sniper round. don't know what the max range for the dragunov is, but the .308 properly loaded is effective out to 1000 meters, and has been used as the basic anti-personnel sniper round in the us army (and a number of others sicne vietnam. past that distance, and the optics needed to engage a man sized target would prohibit their effective use at closer ranges under most combat conditions.
however, for a sniper rifle, it's jsut too damn bulky.

yeah but if you are basically aiming for a light machine gun, you basically run it off a vehicle mount, a tripod, or carry from the hip. the handles are in an ok place for carrying from the hip.
but the whole magazine setup ont eh machine gun is seriously not right. It either doesn't look like it is a box holing a bunch of belt fed ammo, and just a long wedge shaped magazine wouldn't exactly hold a reliable feeding mechanism.
