Great challenge!!

Our team will be working on the legend of "Archimedes' Mirror" and the siege of Syracuse.

Archimedes was one of the greatest minds of all time. As a mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer he made contributions to many fields of science and also designed innovative machines and siege engines.

Some say he also created the legendary "Heat Ray", which was a large array of highly polished bronze mirrors used to focus sunlight on to a ship until it burned.

All of those weapons were used to protect Syracuse from the roman attackers (214–212 BC), and we thought it could be a great chance to put interesting steampunk engines, weapons and flying ships in the middle of a great epic battle.

We'll post more details soon.
Good luck you all!!

Here are some information we are using to create our story.

"Syracuse (Italian: Siracusa, Sicilian: Sarausa, Classical Greek: Συρακοῦσαι / transliterated: Syrakousai) is a historic city in southern Italy, the capital of the province of Syracuse. The city is noted for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture and association to Archimedes, playing an important role in ancient times as one of the top powers of the Mediterranean world; it is over 2,700 years old. Syracuse is located in the south-east corner of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Syracuse next to the Ionian Sea.

The city was founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians and became a very powerful city-state. Syracuse was allied with Sparta and Corinth, exerting influence over the entire Magna Grecia area of which it was the most important city. Once described by Cicero as "the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all", it later became part of the Roman Republic and Byzantine Empire."

wikipedia - Syracuse, Sicily

"Despite diplomatic attempts, war broke out between the Roman Republic and the Kingdom of Syracuse in 214 BC, while the Romans were still busy battling with Carthage at the height of the Second Punic War.

A Roman force led by the General Marcus Claudius Marcellus consequently laid siege to the port city by sea and land. The city of Syracuse, located on the eastern coast of Sicily was reknowned for it's significant fortifications, great walls that protected the city from attack and among the Syracuse defenders was the mathematician and scientist Archimedes...

"..., Archimedes' devised defensive devices to counter the Roman efforts including a huge crane (see the Claw of Archimedes) operated hook that was used to lift the enemy ships out of the sea before dropping them to their doom. He also created a giant mirror (see Heat ray) that was used to deflect the powerful mediterranean sun onto the ships sails, setting fire to them. These measures, along with the fire from ballistas and onagers mounted on the city walls, frustrated the Romans and forced them to attempt costly direct assaults."

wikipedia - Siege of Syracuse (214-212 BC)

We have already finished the script and we'll post the storyboard soon!!

Hello everyone. I am one of team members. On our style of steampunk, we resolve don't adopt the use of gunpowder and even electricity, since we want something more rustic, the most advanced equipments are moved to steam. Then we will have flying boats with motors that will produce impulse, with steam power + wind, catapults and other mechanisms. Soon we will post those concepts.

Thank's.

Hi Telli,

Thanks for the support! Yes, we are planning on shooting at least two takes. One will be the soldier looking for the flying fleet and the other one will be the Archimedes scene. We will try to shoot some other material as soldiers in diferent situations to composite with the city plates. Our producers are looking for costumes, camera, places, actors, etc.

What we are really looking for is to have fun!!

Hello!!

We finally managed to shoot our soldier takes. We would like to thank Conspiração Filmes for all the support and material, Thiago Lima for the camera, Mauricio Stal for shooting, Thiago Facina for helping with the photography, and our great actors, Paulo Victor (giant greek) and Edmar Pereira (Archimedes), the other soldiers were our 3d artist Paulo Duarte and our compositor guy Ronaldo Pucci.

All the crew had a lot of work to do during that long shooting day. We started early in the morning at a soccer field gently provided by Tycoon studios, then we went to my place to shoot the aerial take and the Archimedes scene.

We all had a lot of fun during the shooting. It was a great chance to learn more about camera, light, chroma, production, acting and directing.

Hope we have time to complete all the things we want for the movie.

This is simply stunning. Really nice to see. You guys really opened my eyes to compositing and 3d. I would have tried to do the whole city in 3d in 1 scene
This is one reason i got way too little variation in my video. But now i know what i need to practice more at.

Great job!
cheers

Superb work!

Live action, CG, Matte Painting, Epic sequences. You guys pulled all the stops and executed them brilliantly.

I am blown away by the work.

Congrats and best of luck!

Hey Nothingness,

We are very glad that you liked it.
We had this crazy idea of making 15 scenes for our trailer so we had a lot of hard work to do. If we tried to do evrything in 3d we wouldnt have finished on time. Its always good to think abaout what is the fastest solution for each element of a scene.

Hey rtobon,

Thanks for the support!! We tried our best during the time we had to do this challenge.
It was a great chance for us to learn more about the whole process!

Diogo,

We know there are a lot of things we could improove but it was a personal project and we had to do it after our work hours. We are all very happy with the final result considering the time that we could dedicate to it.

Our main goal was to complete all the 15 scenes we planned on the storyboard and we did it. The best thing of this contest was to learn more about vfx and team work.

Thanks for the critics.

Great to see you guys did it in time! The result is amazing! Loved the colors and style...the real footage have been mixed really well. My only concern is the smoke that not feels quite on pair with the rest. It's pretty good nonetheless, just that the rest is great. :)

Congratulations and good luck everyone!

Jr.
