Greetings, all. I'm Ransom Patterson. I am a beginner in 3D and drawing, using Blender and Photoshop as my primary softwares. My knowledge of mythology and traditions not being extensive, I decided to base my entry on a scene from the first Harry Potter movie. It is not a hugely pivotal scene in the movie, but it struck me as perfect for this challenge. It involves the scene in which Harry, Ron, and Hermione are trapped within the grips of the Devi's Snare. I am going to create a steampunk version of this monster with some of my own changes. It will then be placed in some sort of environment. I have created some concept art already, which I will post when I get a chance. I hope to learn a lot from this challenge, and I look forward to watching and learning from other entries.

Have a nice day.

This is my sketch to get an idea of the scene's composition. I will be creating and posting more individual character sketches as I create them.

This is a concept for the boiler of the creature.

This is probably my last concept sketch. It is of the hatch or entrance to what the creature is guarding. Expect some model WIPs soon.

This is the my first go at the boiler part of the creature. I would really appreciate any critique possible.

This is the head of the monster. I don't do that much creature/character modeling, so I am particularly looking for pointers and suggestions on this part.

This is going to sound kind of strange, but I am changing the theme of my entry. The theme I had didn't allow me to do very much with the environment and story. Expect some new artwork soon.

Have a nice day.

This is my sketch of a steampunk templar knight. I am working from both the templar legends/facts and a myth about the Holy Grail in Castle Corbenic.

Hey, I'm using blender too. :D
If you want to learn more about modeling you can search online
for blender modeling tutorials, here's a link to a really good one (http://wiki.blender.org/uploads/6/66/Introduction_to_Character_Animation_19_Sept_2006.pdf).
It might take a minute to load up.
I guess the templar knights were burned at the stake into extinction,
that would be a good CG image. :D <<Just joking, don't make that image!
Good luck!

Here is the first test on the templar knight model. It is not finished yet; I still need to add the boiler on his back and some other details besides. I really would love any ideas on how to improve this guy, seeing as I don't do very many characters.

I added the boiler and reworked the breastplate a little bit.

I know it's been a while since I posted any updates, but here's another one. This is my progress so far on the castle model. I would love any advice on improving it.

Have a nice day.

Sorry, for some reason the image didn't attach in my last post.

This is a test of lighting and composition for the image. Because it is a test, I have used extremely simple models and a very basic texture on the ground. What I am looking for right now is advice on the colors and the camera angle, along with anything else you can think of. I am going for a dark and evil feeling here.

More will follow.

I am now working on a final composition. I have done no textures or materials yet, and I am now focusing on lighting/composition. If you think there is a way in which I can improve any aspect of this image, then tell me.

Merry Christmas.

I am nearly done with my entry. This is what the final image will probably look like. If you have any suggestions, throw them out there. I did my post-pro partially in Blender and partially in Photoshop.

Software: Blender,Photoshop

This image is based on the legend of Castle Corbenic, the mythical location of the Holy Grail. The
castle lies deep within Britain, at an almost impossible to find location. In my interpretation of
this theme, I also brought into play another classic character, the Templar Knight. Although the
Templars were a real group, there is much romance surrounding them and their adventures.

The Castle Corbenic is protected by a lonely sentinel, a cyborg of sorts, sworn to defend the
castle and grail, making sure that anyone who manages to even cross the desolate terrain
surrounding the castle never discovers the secret that rests within.

Armed with a fearsome rapier and armor impervious to all man-made weapons, the guardian of this
place is terrible to behold. His armor is gnarled and corroded by the extreme conditions. No one
has ever faced him in battle and lived. With him as its guardian, the castle is safe from looters
and overzealous pilgrims who might take this treasure for themselves. After all, the guardian has
Providence on his side, and who can withstand the very power of the Almighty Himself?

This was created using Blender 2.48 and Photoshop. Blender was used for modeling, unwrapping,
layout, rendering, and compositing. Photoshop was used for textures(I used a few images off of
CGtextures.com for reference, but not in the final render), color touch up, and the text.

I really had a wonderful time working on this image. The experience and knowledge I gained are
worth more than any prize. God bless.
